It is a traditional, free standing, desk measuring 27ins( 69 cms) wide x 1 9 ins(49cms) deep x 32ins( 81 cms) at its highest at the back. And is constructed with slightly tapering legs with a square sectioned top box, having an angled front surface, a flat topped back edge and a hinged lid. Internally it is plain with some delightful arched pidgeon holes. In a row, at the back. There was once a lock and key but this has long since disappeared and the blank keyhole is now plugged with a piece of wood. The hinges are solid and sound. It ia made from solid pine with what I think aere beech legs. The wood is rot and worm free but has lots scarring and the legs ... moreare part stained and have some gaps in them. The entire leg assembly. With the valance boards, has been removed, dismantled, cleaned and then reglued and rescrewed to make sure that the whole thing doesn't wobble resulting in a very stable and solid desk, all finished with an antique wax. It is an attractive and charming desk that has clearly had a long and hard life! It has the inevitable myriad of scars. Dents, dinks, holes, splits and so on, but nothing threatening and all very characterful, including a missing section from the far left hand side internal pidgeon hole, the obvious but not moving split on the front top and some iffy knots here and there and so on. Shepherd's Improved Desk Slate This primitive child's school desk slate measures 10 1/2" x 7 3/4" The angled design goes from 3/4" high in the front to 2" high in the back for ease of writing. The sliding wooden top is covered with the original advertisement that reads: Shepherd's Improved Desk Slate New Combination of Slates Patented June 29th. 1875 and patent applied for This desk contains 22 copies in Arithmetic and Drawing C.C. Shepherd, New York The bottom of the Desk Slate is where the actual slate is for drawing. And the slate also forms the inside of the'desk. Inside are some of the original drawing examples on fragile brown paper, including a deer, sheep, goats and alphabet letters. There are also farm animal heads on the back of the slate to practic drawing. Unfortunately the wooden cover has ... morea crack and it's also warped. One of the wooden support pieces inside has come loose but is included and can be replaced. This is a rare find and a great example of 19th century school supplies. Check out my other items! Antique school desk frames from early 1900's
These are to the best of my knowledge iron side frames from antique school desks. I cannot verify the exact age but they are very old and very ornate and could be used for many different things. I acquired them from my Uncle's estate and would like to sell them to someone who could make use of them. You are buying exactly what is pictured and the pieces are about 26 inches each in length. Antique Moulthrop school desk. Oak. Great collector's piece. Top is adjustable. And I think the height is too, I just don't know how to do it! The drawer pull says"Langslow Fowler Co. Rochester, NY" with"Moulthrop" at the bottom with another word above it that I cannot make out. The words are worn. There is a small linear crack on the top of the desk in the writing area that you can see in the photos. I cannot ship this item so it's local pick up only, due to the weight. The front and back rails that connect the banks are missing. The front molding is also loose. Lot of 12 Antique School Desk Ink Wells Dips with the Original Carrying Case. Very nice lot of antique ink wells for use in children's school desks. The desks would have had a small opening carved into the top that these wells would fit down into. The teacher used the wooden container to distribute the wells to the children at the beginning of the day and collect them when school was over. The ink wells are in very good condition. No chips or cracks. Some of the lids/glass wells have markings, some don't. They have corked lids, some which come off easily, others don't. I am not going to force them off. Dried Ink still remains in some containers. Each ink well measures 1 3/4" tall and 2" in diameter across the lid. The glass portion is appx. 1 3/8" diameter x 1 1/2" deep. Antique School Desk Under the top is a label that says: Moulthrop Universal" Patented, Made by by Langslow, Fowler Company, Rochester, NY Research indicates that this desk was designed by Samuel P. Moulthrop(1879-1932) Who was a school teacher ... moreand principal of Rochester area schools. He designed this desk to be usable by children and also adults who were taking night classes and nurse training courses. Langslow, Fowler Company started manufacturing them about 1905. This desk is more unusual to me because of the large oak panel in front. The vertical storage, and the foot rest. The design certainly does provide more room underneath the top for adults. I, for instance, although large in size, was able to sit down in the seat by lifting the top straight up, and then lowering it when I was in position. It was a bit cramped, but then again, it was designed at a time when adults were much smaller in general. Made of Tiger oak panels and stamped and tubular steel parts. The oak is dark and rich in color from age. This desk has an ink well hole(no ink well. But I think you could find one on eBay if you look long enough) The seat post underneath has three holes. I would guess where you could add a bolt or collar(not included) to adjust the seat height. The seat top is currently about 16" off the ground.
