Offered here is an excellent antique 19th century English secretary desk. This desk is in very good antique condition. It stands 87" high. Is 44" wide at the widest point and 22" deep. Each side of the base is built with a single 22" mahogany board. The desk features an interior fitted with 6 small drawers, a locking(key included) door interior compartment, and flanking that, 2"hidden" vertical pull out cash and document compartments which are disguised as books. These have actual leather bindings labeled in gold ROWE'S WORKS 1 and ROWE'S WORKS 2. Please see photos. The base houses 4 graduated drawers and the pull outs to support the desk writing surface. This desk is solid and stable. This desk. As is the case with all truly old furniture, does have some condition issues. There is a repair to the lower exterior right corner of the fall front. One leg was repaired. I believe that the hardware was replaced many years ago. FANTASTIC ESTATE FIND! This gorgeous French writing desk was sitting in a backroom with painting supplies on it.unbelievable! Although this piece is not perfect. The flaws in the top only add character and experience to the rich feel of this solid mahogany, handcrafted beauty. The wonderful handcarved cabriole legs with such an ornate fineal structure under the desktop are outstanding and capped with very ornate bronze eagle talons gripping it's ball feet present this piece of history with style, grace and strength. No one at the sale knew much about this table/desk. Except that it had been in the family for generations. The joinery help in dating this piece to prior to the industrial age with it's hand carved ducktails in the drawer and the ornate eagle talon/claw and ball feet tend to point towards an upper east coast, i.e. New ... moreYork, Rhode Island, Maryland, origin probably sometime between 1800 and 1850. The only maker's or craftsman mark are the numbers 1111 carved into the bottom of the desk and 1114 carved into the bottom of the drawer. It is pretty amazing the way it sits, but with a little know-how and the right products on the desk surface(the legs and fineal are darn near perfect) this piece would be simply stunning. Antique Mahogany Lap Desk Velvet Interior Compartments Missing Lock
Up for auction is an antique lap desk recently found at auction in the suburban Philadelphia PA area. It has no inkwells. It is missing covers and dividers to the compartments, we feel the velvet may not be the original, it has age but does not seem as old as the piece perhaps, The lock mechanism is missing. None the less a beautiful example of an antique lap desk worthy of a little repair with the pieces inside in photo 6. The exterior of the lock is there, but only the face, the locking mechanism was removed prior to auction. The monogram plate was never engraved but has some surface scratching, along with the whole piece, commensurate with age and use. There are some remnants of tape on the top, perhaps from auction or estate labeling. Antique American Mahogany Writing Desk Bureau with Brass Handles Made in 1800s
This is a very nice very heavy Desk Bureau made in USA circa 1820. There are a few little repairs to the flap but the rest of the desk is pretty good. The colors is a brown and slightly reddish. The drawers and the flap has satinwood string inlay. There are small areas were some is missing, it sits on splayed feet and has brass handles which may not be the original ones. The back and the drawer linings again are all original with dovetail joints to the drawers. Its fitted with 2 envelope drawers to the interiors and many small drawers with a few small brass handles missing. But we will try and find these before its sold. The slides work fine to support the flap. Measurements are 42 wide 20 deep. 43 high. The joinery helped in dating this piece to prior to the industrial age with it's hand carved ducktails in the drawer and the ornate eagle talon/claw and ball feet tend to point towards an upper east coast, i.e. New York, Rhode Island, Maryland, origin probably sometime around 1850-1860. The only maker's or craftsman mark are the numbers 1111 carved into the bottom of the desk and 1114 carved into the bottom of the drawer. A previous owner may have attempted or started a refinish job on this piece, but did not do much other than some spot touchup. It is pretty amazing the way it sits, but with a little know-how and the right products on the desk surface(the legs and fineal are darn near perfect) this piece would be simply stunning. This is a rare Antique ca.1827 Georgian Mahogany Officer`s Travel Lap Desk. Sometimes called a Gentlemen`s Lap Desk. It is quite large measuring 22"x 11"x 8.5"closed, 22"x 22.5"open and weighs 17 lbs. When you raise the small partition to the right of the center compartment there is a secret space where a written dated note was found. All of the brass hardware is original. The key has been lost. It has a dovetailed full length drawer. The inside Writing Surface is dark brown Leather with gold stamped embossing. It has two inkwells. The bottom is covered with dark green felt. This is a very nice mahogany Partners Desk made by Hobbs of London. It has a black leather top which may not be the original one. It also has the original brass handles, the drawers are dovetail joints. To the front there are 9 drawers which all run fine to the back there are 2 doors. The top comes of the two pedestals so its easy to transport. The condition is pretty good but has a little wear with age. Either side of the pedestals it has the Edwardian style reeded lines. Both sides of the pedestal has mahogany inserted panels. Measurements are 60 wide 42 deep 31 high and the center is 24 high 26 wide. So its fine for your legs to go under. Up for sale is this beautiful antique(early 1900s) mahogany serpentine-front kneehole desk. I am not sure if it's Chippendale-style. But it does have Chippendale handles. It has a beautiful rope detail around the top. Overall Excellent Condition! It was recently restored and has not been used since. It is like-new! There is a little tarnish on some of the handles(not noticeable unless up close) The back boards and outer side boards were replaced and the inside of the large center drawer was relined during the restoration. Circa the late 19 th century. The 15 ¾ inch long. 5 inch high folding lap desk is in good overall condition considering its over 100 year age. The top opens and closes freely and easily and the hinges are securely attacked. The original burgundy felt desk cover is intact and in good condition on both halves of the writing surface. The wood pattern on one end gives the appearance in the photo as a dent but it is straight. All of the brass pieces are well attached and none are missing. The brass lock is there but although the key turns and the latch moves it does not catch the corresponding piece in the lid. Having a more slender frame than many of the desks of the period. It is an object that does not impose itself on a room, but rather it's graceful and understated form bring depth and visual interest to whatever space it becomes a part of. With a deep and wonderfully oxidized early finish, preserved under many layers of glowing wax, the vibrant grains of the solid mahogany planks utilized in all primary surfaces are shown in their best light. The case itself is of simple construction. The sides dovetailed into the bottom, the top and sides joined with a blind dovetail to leave a smooth undisturbed top surface. The slant lid falls over original wrought ... moreiron hinges to rest on a pair of projecting lopers with original shaped brass pulls, revealing a handsomely fitted interior with a pair of pigeon-hole slots with scalloped valances flanking the fluted document drawers and molded prospect door. The document drawers are inoperable from the front, these being the first clue that the entire prospect section of the interior is actually a hidden compartment- by opening the prospect door and depressing a switch hidden in the top of the open space, the entire box of both document drawers and prospect door is released to reveal the hidden access to the document drawers from the back. The rest of the little drawers lining the interior are very well crafted, each with precise little dovetails in the oak secondary woods and retaining their original knobs. The drawers of the facade are constructed in the typical manner. Hewn from incredibly thick mahogany logs, these drawers are sawn into shape with a continuous plank to achieve the fluid movement found in the case. The top drawer is particularly difficult to execute, as this retains much more of the mahogany and not only serpentines with the case but also is faceted along the top edge. These are crafted in the typical manner for the Northern Shore of Massachusetts- the pine frame is dovetailed along the front and back, the bottom deeply chamfered and set into rabbets in the sides of the drawer over which a thin pine runner is applied to create the groove. They slide easily in and out of the case over a few original and several replaced interior case runners, these nailed to the case from the inside. The drawers are divided by drawer blades with raised edges to simulate cockbead molding, affixed into the sides of the case on either end with open dovetails; as economical craftsmen, only a few inches of mahogany line the front of the drawer blade, which is backed by several inches of pine. The interior is somewhat typical of the region. Having a stepped interior with a central half-shell carved drawer over a conforming blocked front drawer flanked by document drawers and three pigeon-hole letter compartments. Antique 19th Century Mahogany Lap Desk Writing Box
99 cent start with no reserve! This auction is for an antique lap desk dating from the late 1800's. In the closed position. It measures 12 1/4" long by 9" from front to back. It is 3 1/8" high in the back and slants down to 1 7/8" high in the front. It is in good structural condition but has several minor flaws which I will now describe in detail: There are areas where the finish is worn unevenly. Some light scratches, and other minor signs of wear. The felt material covering the writing surface is rough along the area where the lid folds down on the inside of the desk. There is some old tape on it there. There is a small sliver of wood chipped off the rim on the left side of the desk(See the last image where arrows are pointing this out) Part of the small felt strap that is used to pull up the writing surface is torn ... moreoff. Only a stub of it remains. The small interior lid that covers the pencil box inside has ink stains on it. There are a couple tiny screws missing from the hinges. But the hinges are fine and working well. There is no key for the locking mechanism. Most of those flaws which I just described are of the minor variety. It could stand to be refinished which would enhance the grain nicely. Or it could be enjoyed with the original finish just as it is. That's up to the winning bidder to decide. Before bidding. This American made 1910 Arts and Crafts period classic roll top desk is solid mahogany with the almost striped figured mahogany veneer and a superb satiny finish. In the left hand drawer is the original"stamp" of National Desk as well as a handwritten note with additional information. One of the previous owners wanted to make sure that any easily passed in reference to the company who built the desk would not be lost. There are manufacturing numbers on the desk. However, it is very difficult ... moreto locate a manufacturer with few clues. At the top of the desk is a great wide shelf and a wood gallery of sorts. All of this wood has fabulous grain! The C roll top glides open smoothly to reveal a wide expanse of work surface available as well as the small cubicles or pigeonholes and small drawers for papers. The cast brass knobs and inset brass pulls are original and there are three small brass knobs missing from the inside drawers. Additional work space is available on each of the top drawers which have"shelves" at the top of the drawers and underneath this flat work space is drawer space. There is one large file drawer and all of the drawers on the right side can be locked down. Drawers are dovetailed with drawers of mahogany and very deep to allow for lots of storage. The original brass feet protected the legs from when the floor was mopped. One of the drawers on the bottom reads"sample fruit( mahogany" for Joe 1879. With the patent date on the drawers of MAR. 1.10. I am not sure why the drawer appears to be dated earlier. This beautiful mahogany sloped lap desk was purchased at an estate sale recently. It has been dated back to mid 19th century. When opened. It features 3- bird's eye maple veneered drawers. The middle drawer is actually a false face. With a hidden drawer behind it that slides out to the side. It does come with a workable key, and the lock appears to be the right period. However, I am not completely sure. As I stated in description. It looks to have been restored at one time. It is fairly large, measuring 21" L x 19" W x 11" H, and weighs about 17 lbs. Antique ca.1827 Georgian Mahogany Lap Desk With Drawer & Leather
This is an Antique ca.1827 Georgian Mahogany Officer`s Travel Lap Desk. Sometimes called a Gentlemen`s Lap Desk. It is quite large measuring 22"x 11"x 8.5"closed, 22"x 22.5"open and weighs 17 lbs. When you raise the small partition to the right of the center compartment there is a secret space where a written dated note was found. All of the brass hardware is original. The key has been lost. It has a dovetailed full length drawer. The inside Writing Surface is dark brown Leather with gold stamped embossing. It has two inkwells. The bottom is covered with dark green felt. Antique Secretary Desk Slant Front Wood Mahogany Rockford Chair & Furniture LPU
Selling this wood secretary desk. This was made by the Rockford Chair and Furniture Co. Rockford ILL. I am not 100% certain, but the research I've done makes me believe it was made between 1920 and 1930, but I could be wrong. This desk measures about 32 1/4" wide by 40" tall. Measures about 17 1/2" deep when closed and 29 1/2" when opened. Has various signs of age/use. Such as light scratches, a chip out of the front foot and some rough marks in the one drawer. Please have a thorough look at the photos for details. I am not sure what wood it is but I believe it is mahogany? We do not have the key. Local Pick Up Only! Cash on pick up preferred.
