Antique Wood Egg Crate w/ Original Farm Ledger! What a Find!
It’s one thing to purchase an original antique! But. When you know the story behind the antique and who actually owned it. Well, that is a very different and unique addition to any collection! The farm where this egg crate was used was in Burlington. Wisconsin. The farm was owned by my mother’s Uncle. David Gowdy. My great Uncle Dave, as we called him when we were children, was a home builder in Chicago Illinois. I guess you would have called him a gentleman farmer. As you can see by some of the pictures of his hand written ledger he was quite the book keeper. The ledger is very interesting to read. Some of the pictures are for actual egg sales along with many other items that were purchased for the farm. As for the egg crate. It is a Primitive Wood Egg Crate w/ Original Cardboard Egg Cartons. It has never been refinished! It measures 12/1/2” ... morex 12/1/2” x 8” high. Nice wood handle and is in great shape for its age. Only thing I can see wrong with this piece is a bottom piece of wood is split off. It still displays very well and would make a very unique addition to any collection! These old crates were used to transport 4 six-pack cartons of glass Coca-Cola bottles from the bottling company to the point of retail sale and return back to the bottler. These were used when the bottles had a return value. You could return your bottle to the local retailer and retrieve a refund for the bottle deposit. The empty bottles would then be returned to the bottler to be washed and refilled. These old wood crates took a lot of abuse loading and unloading. Washing, etc. This one is in good shape. The side panels and end boards are intact with no damage. The interior dividers are intact with no damage or repairs. The bottom slats are well attached but have some splitting damage. Vintage fruit crate. All original. See a brief history below. In 1921. Joseph DiGiorgio owned 20,482 acres of productive fruit lands in California. In 1935, his holdings had increased to 40,000 acres, mostly in California. Included in this acreage were 6,000 acres near Arvin in Kern County, and another 6,000 acres near Delano in Tulare County. Hundreds of Asian and Chicano farm workers provided the labor to make this land profitable for the DiGiorgio corporation. The Kawasaki Labor Camp. Located in the vicinity of Delano, consisted of about 40 small buildings in which farm laborers were housed, a few larger residences where the camp bosses lived, and a mess hall and company store providing services for laborers. Eight structures at the northwestern portion of the property are two-room wooden buildings; the remaining laborers' dwellings ... moreare former railroad boxcars placed on concrete blocks. In the center of these latter structures is a more recently constructed concrete-block shower and bathroom. Corporate farming first appeared in Delano in the late 1920s. The larger is marked with Donaldson Art Sign Co. Cov KY. We are also including a wooden Kayo bottle crate which is showing age but is a great piece. I would venture to say that these are the finest 2 examples out there of these wonderful signs and the crate is probably early 1930's- provenance is unbeatable. These have been mounted indoors for their entire life both dating to 1940's or 50's.
