Fine bronze depicting Satan carrying a large trunk on his back the trunk is cold painted to show a dark brown wood effect which I have tried to show in the photos. The gold coloured match container door swings open and the recess to hold the matches is actually set deep into the marble base. I can find no makers mark though the inside of the trunk has a old green baize lining to it so it's possible the makers mark could be under the green baize. The quality and quirkiness and size lead me to belive it is most likely by franz bergman. Incredible fine detail and wonderful patina to the whole piece as can be seen in the photos. Undoubtably Austrian with his finely detailed lederhosen and dating circa 1880-1900s in age. Size, total height is 230 mm And marble base is 90 mm by 150 mm showing minor chips see photos. The hinged trunk will hold ... morearound 6- 8 thick cigars or many more cigarettes The trunk measures 120mm tall by 85mm wide by 60mm deep. As you can see the detail and craftsmanship that went into the design of the trunk such as the false lock and the hinged handle as well as the devils detail is outstanding. Devil seems to have some form of club or stick wrapped in his tail see photos. A very fine and rare collectors piece of which in 20 plus years of collecting antique devils I have never seen another similar.

ANTIQUE PAINTED AUSTRIAN BERGMANN VIENNA BRONZE BOOK ROW ARABIAN MONKEY BOOKENDS
Up for auction is an impressive bookend pair from Austria. It is a pleasant action to inform the reader that this is a perfect antique set. And one of the first pairs produced in this design. Some may recognize this design as one produced also by the J.B. Hirsch Foundry. That is true in part. With these, there is a short, yet unique lineage. These pair being sold were the absolute first, and are considered First generation Austrian. Second generation Austrian sets, came on different bases, and were stamped in red ink MADE IN AUSTRIA. Then, there was a stop in production. Production started again, in France, with Susse Freres, the Susse Brothers, but instead of their version being dressed in multicolor paint, they were shades of a single color, with an ivory book slipped in the monkeys' hands. A few years later, the J.B Hirsch Company ... morereleased these in a manner closest to Susse Freres on black polished stone bases in bronze, gold, or teal green. These were all before 1930. Production ceased entirely mid 1930. On occasion, you will run across the more recent re-issues from the 1990's I believe, those have popularity amongst some because of the charmed design, and the scarcity of finding an authentic set. All that aside. These are fantastic, and were made before the Scopes Monkey trial started here in the U.S. These are from the very early 1920's, like 1921 or 1922. Be advised, that for collectors of those Arabian Bazaar themed bronzes, these are ideal. These have a closer relationship to those Arabic works, than they do the Trials and Writing on Evolution, but still, quite fitting nonetheless. On the book pages, the reader will Arabic lettering, something not seen on later pairs. That adds value to this already striking set. None of the Austrian varieties of these were marked on the bodies. Only on the bases. Remember. 1st generation fancy mark, 2nd generation red ink stamp. On the stone bases. There are two circular seals. The both read the same, MADE IN AUSTRIA, with another pseudonym of Franz Xavier

The object bears the typical Bergmann"B enclosed in a jug" mark. This item is 90mm tall. As these figurines are still manufactured and painted by hand, small variations in detail or color, to the pictured object, are normal. Each item will be delivered in a velvet pouch together with a certificate by the manufacturer. About the production of these miniatures- the"Lost Wax Method" The actual material of the object is Brass. I think these figurines were called"Vienna Bronze" because Brass was not that well known as ... moreBronze. Liquid Brass would destory the rubber and for this reason the figurine is in the first step casted out of wax. All that is covered with plaster or clay. The mould is dried and fired. This way the clay is getting hard while the wax is melting. A hollow space is created- the negative. This negative gets filled with liquid Brass. When the Brass is cooled down. It gets hard. The plaster around the brass core can be broken off and the figurines made of Brass are the desired result. These figurines will be cut off, their whole surface gets engraved by hammer and punch, and finally the items get marked with the traditional"Jug" mark and painted in a costly and detailled manner.
