As Jonathan Swift famously wrote, He was a bold man that first ate an oyster” Oyster consumption was perhaps at its peak during the 19th century, when the abundance and affordability of oysters made them an almost omnipresent menu item, available at street stands and fine dining establishments alike. Common oyster preparations include smoking, frying, roasting, or steaming. One of the most distinctive oyster recipes, Oysters Rockefeller, was conceived in 1899 at the famed New Orleans restaurant, Antoine’s. The original recipe remains a family secret, but a typical version calls for oysters on the half-shell covered with some combination of greens, sauce, and bread crumbs, then baked. Oysters were so plentiful and available that they could be purchased on the streets. At fine dining establishments, oyster rooms and many other places. Once the speed of transportation increased and better shipping technologies were available, oysters could be shipped to a much wider market of oyster enthusiasts. In fact, oysters became so popular that even special Oyster Parties were held far and wide among the upper and middle classes. Oysters were at the height of their consumption and popularity between 1810 and 1870. They continued to be in great demand and were still widely available until World War I, when their numbers went into steep decline due to over harvesting and the destruction of their natural habitat. PRR China Oyster Plate
I have available for auction. A 8 1/2" china"Oyster Plate" that was made for the Pennsylvania Railroad in Austria under the"Wright& Tyndale" mark in Philadelphia, PA. This plate is white with a gold highlighted design. These plates were very ornate but had a hard time with the gold trim wearing off as the gold is over the glaze. It is hard to find one like this with very little wear to that trim. I can find no other problems with this plate except for several very,very tiny pimples in several of the compartments. Offered for sale is a beautiful glass dessert plate from Federal Glass. In the COLUMBIA pattern(variation of Oyster& Pearl or Bubble) It has a square shape with rounded corners, and small bubbles or pearls pressed into(or raised from) the surface. The raised pattern is on the BACK of the plate only; the top surface is smooth. This pattern was made from 1938 to 1942, and was made in the U.S.A. It measures 6 inches(15.2cm) edge to edge. And 6 3/4 inches(17.1cm) from corner to corner. A U.S. quarter is shown in pictures 3 and 4, to give an accurate impression of the size at a glance. It is free from chips. Cracks and scratches, and there is no lime scale or detergent damage. The gold trim does show some wear(see pictures) All my items are from a SMOKE FREE home. Rare 19thC UPW Porcelain Black Ground Oyster Plate Porzellan Austern Teller
For sale is a rare and fun oyster plate made by the Union Porcelain Works around 1881. It is nicely shaped and molded with seaweed and shells in relief as well as a gold trim and what makes this one extra rare is the black ground color which one rarely if ever sees. These are highly collectible and really quite nice. American porcelain after all is much less common than its European counterparts. The plate has four wells for oysters as well as one shell for the sauce. The dish is in great condition with two chips to the sides of the footring which don't take away from the piece. It is about 1 inch tall. 8.5 inches wide and 6.5 inches deep. It is marked as shown on the underside with the U.P.W. over the eagle's head in green as well as PAT. JAN. 4-1881 over it. Stunning fine porcelain oyster plate with alternating floral and courting scenes. Decoration looks very French. Edged in gold with gold spirals between the oyster bowls. Fairly lightweight and when held up to the light there is some transparency. The images are handpainted and each one is different. As stated. There is wear to the gold on the edges, but no chips or cracks. The color looks mint green to my eye, however, my friend said it looks light blue to him. ANTIQUE BLUE OYSTER PLATE MARKED ITALY MAJOLICA
This is a 10 inch plate with 7 places to put your oysters. It is marked"Made Italy" on the back. Looking at the plate you can see the overall crazing from age. You can also see some manufactures flaws but there is nothing that looks like a chip or crack that happened after it was made. My pictures should give you an idea of what I am talking about. At the base of one of the oysters closest to the center there appears to be a chip of about 1/8" but on close inspection you can see that it is really a missed glazing spot. There are also several pinholes that are also flaws made in the manufacturing process. The overall look of the glaze does not show any scratches from utensils or oyster shells. I don't think anyone used this plate and I also think because of the crazing that it is quite old. I think this is a nice find and ... morewould be a welcome addition to anyone's collection. I am underpricing the plate and letting the market decide on whether or not I am right on the piece. Hopefully two or more of you who know what you are looking at will see this plate. It has the smaller 5 oyster wells motif and the central Lemon well is a soft pearly grey. Antique Hand Painted Oyster Plate c1850-1891, op228
Offered for your collecting enjoyment is this lovely antique oyster plate. I have had many of these over the years that were marked with the Haviland and Co. mark. This one was made between 1855 and 1891 before they had to start marking each item with the country of manufacture. This one is marked with incompleat numbers on the back in a redish color. It is hand painted and features 6 wells for oysters. Three depict red coral on the bottom of the sea, the other 3 are oyster"scars" on the shell with a pink and light blue background. The center well is a lovely lemonny color for lemon wedges or vinegrette. It is in excellent condition for its great age with no chips or cracks on the front! It does have some wear to the high points from stacking which is normal for a plate this old and a small chip on the back that is not seen from ... morethe front. It measures 9.25 inches in diameter.
