Romulus of Rome Bronze Figurine Grand Tour Antique 4 inches tall. Probably European Grand Tour piece. Romulus Ex Velo is inscribed on base in old Latin characters. Romulus was the founder of Rome. Raised by a she wolf who killed his brother Remus to establish the capital. His hands hold an axe, implement used to kill his brother, and possible a scepter of some sort. Very substantial at 10.6 ounces.

Grand Tour Bronze Ewer, Ca. 1860s
This auction is for a very fine. 19th century, Grand Tour, bronze ewer. This ewer is modeled after a bladder used in ancient times to store wine. It is decorated with a pair of rams on either side of the mouth, gadrooning alone the lip, a foliate handle ending with a small winged goddess at the back. It is solid bronze and has lovely patination. This was originally purchased from Sotheby's Souvenirs of the Grand Tour Sale in the 90's. It stands 8.5" tall.

Napoleon Column - Place Vendome - Bronze - Grand Tour - Thermometer Base
Circa 1830's Thermometer/Barometer base of the Napoleon Column in the Place Vendome. Paris. The column was originally erected by Napoleon to celebrate his victory of the Battle of Austerlitz. Construction of the column began in 1806 and completed in 1810. At that time the statue of the Emperor at the top was in the Roman style. With Bonaparte portrayed as a victorious Roman god Mars. After Napoleon's defeat at Waterloo and the restoration of the Bourbon kings the statue of Napoleon was destroyed, only to be replaced when the Bourbons were again toppled from the throne of France. The statue commissioned by Orlean King Louis-Phillipe portrayed Napoleon not as a Roman-style emperor but in his well-known guise as the"Little Corporal" with long coat and bicorne hat. I believe this is the incarnation of the column copied in this ... moreminiature. The statue was changed or restored twice more and the Emperor's image returned to a more classical treatment, as per the original. This miniature column has great detail for its size with a rotating frieze climbing the hight of the column patterned after Trajan's Column in the ancient forum in Rome. The tiny statue of Napoleon Bonaparte at the top is equally well modeled. The item would have most likely been manufactured in France as a"Grand Tour" souvenir. Originally a thermometer or barometer would have been attached to the back. The piece measures approximately 12 1/2" tall. The base is 4" x 4" The base is stone. The column is most likely bronze and shows verdisgris patina in places. The upper gallery rail looks to be brass. The lower gallery rail that would have been attached to the stone base is missing. The stone shows some hazing and discoloration from age and use. There are no breaks in the bronze decoration. But the reverse of the column is rough and unfinished as it once would have been covered by a scientific instrument. The Arch of Constantine is featured on the sides of the cloth, and on every napkin as well. A rare and glorious showpiece! The tablecloth measures approx 70 x 110 inches. With 12 napkins measuring 19 x 19.5 inches. Color is very light ecru; 2nd last photo is good for color, not quite exact. Condition is excellent. I don't think this was ever used. This is a direct cast copy and not one the many modern made and very low quality aluminum cast copies which have no detail whatsoever. The original shield was purchased from the Italian Government and is now part of the metropolitan Museum in New York. This piece is a direct casting taken from molds off of the original Roman legate treasure that was sold in Germany and not the re-sculpted copies made in Italy later on.
