~ ARIADNE reclining on a Panther ~ small porcelain Statue ~ Grand Tour souvenir? This late nineteenth century porcelain replica depicts the Minoan Ariadne reclining on one of Dionysius’ panthers. I believe that it is porcelain. But not sure. It came from the estate of a local family that travelled abroad in the late 1800s. It measures 5 1/2” across and over 5 3/4” tall. This piece is modeled on the masterwork by Johann Heinrich Dannecker. The nude figure and the panther are in excellent condition. But the base has an issue. It has been broken and repaired. And has a crack and a chip at the site of the damage which is at the bottom right/front of the base. The item is marked underneath with numerals 289. I don’t know this category of item. Antique Victorian Grand Tour Sterling Silver Filigree Egyptian Scarab Pendant
For sale is an antique 1.25" pendant that is a pottery scarab set in a sterling silver filigree housing. Pendant is not marked. But has acid tested as sterling. Another auction that had earrings that had the silver housing with the exact same pattern were listed as antique Victorian Grand Tour pieces. The detail of the sterling and the obvious age of the pottery scarab would lead me to believe this is true. I have not attempted to clean the piece or shine the sterling in any manner.

Antique 19thC Grand Tour Pietra Dura Plaques & Bronze Snake Handle Ibrik Pitcher
Up for bids is this Antique 19thC Grand Tour Pietra Dura Plaques& Bronze Snake Handle Ibrik Pitcher. This is a very unusual piece that I haven't been able to find anything else like it in my research. This piece was made during the mid to late 19thC in either France or Italy. The piece is in the form of an Ibrik pitcher which means that this piece was made to be sold as a souvenir of the Grand Tour to wealthy people from the Middle East. The pitcher is made of glass and it is covered stylized scrolling leaves. The pitcher has a figural bronze handle which depicts a snake which has branches coming out from his mouth which are covered in leaves. Over the spout is a hinged cover which has a figural leaf attached to it. This piece comes with its original bronze under tray which is engraved with Persian style decorations on the edge and ... morestylized leaves in the center. The decoration on the tray is hand engraved. The pitcher still has its original ground glass stopper. On each side of the pitcher there is a 1 1/4" x 1" pietra dura plaque. One of the plaques depicts a purple pansy and the other depicts a tulip. The pitcher stands 10 3/4" in height and is 8 3/8 from handle to handle. The tray has a diameter of 5 7/8" and stands 3/4" in height. Both pieces are in great condition with just the finial on the lid is bent but that would be an easy fix and also there is a thin crack to the bronze base that was enforced with some sort of cement to keep the split stable. There is also a slight bend to the setting which the pansy plaque is set in. The plaques are free of chips or cracks. Gilt paintings- but this is composed of a sparkling silver leaf type paint for the background and it is very well done. It is signed and dated 1950. It still wears its original label showing"Tahan Fr. de l'Empereur" Tahan. Purveyor— Fournisseur— of the Emperor) proof that this wonderful box was sold in his own luxury shop, visited by aristocrats and wealthy art lovers from all the world on their way to the discovery of the Antique World. This unusual box has five hand painted in lilac pink on grey background porcelain medallions showing classical profiles of Mars/ Ares. God of War(lid) and four different classical maidens or goddesses(two on the front panel, one on each side) For such an object, the porcelain is very finely painted and was probably done at the Sèvres factory. Each medallion is set as for a precious jewel with claws in an extremely detailed ormolu mount. The back side shows two ormolu stars. The frames. Holding brass panels with thin dots design, are set with tiny rivet heads. Lid and lower rim are surrounded by pearls. The box is resting on four ball feet and stands very stable. Lid is closing fine, no hinge problem. No repair. A former collector replaced the original fragile silk lining by lasting exotic wood panels well fitted on all sides. Fortunately. The craftsman was requested to keep the original bottom velvet(color was lilac, matching the porcelain medallions) of the box with its Tahan label. Gilding partly rubbed. They are printed on paper that is not acid free and in most cases have not been stored in the best way. So some of the maps you are buying may be in a condition that reflects both of these facts. Antique Beaded Purse from the Grand Tour- Venetian Gondolas 1820-1840s
This auction is for an antique beaded purse. Made in the early 19th century for tourists to Venice. These must have been made in volume. The purse museum in Amsterdam has one of identical construction but lacking the Venetian motif, dated from the 1840s- they have been dated as early as the 1820s. It depicts a series of gondolas being pushed over a green canal. This scene offset with scalloping florals above and smaller, denser florals below. The lowest band contains a Greek key-like motif. First there are 42 7 1/2 x 9 1/2 images by Salviati. Almost all of Venice. Then there are 53 images, 4 1/2 x 7" by different photographers, of Paris and London. Finally there are 80 images of Egypt, Alexandria, Cairo, and the Nile Valley, all measuring 3 1/2 x 5 1/2" The photographs are all in very good to excellent condition, without fading, tears, or other problems. They give a wonderful picture of a time gone by, from images of a woman and her slave to the skeleton of a camel in the Egyptian sands. This is a very cool. Very versatile, very capable, high-quality backpack set-up for world travel. It's in excellent condition, without any discernible flaws. At 90 litres. It's basically the max size for a bag like this. Per the name, Grand Tour, it's designed for weeks-long trekking, and it provides a very civilized and efficient way to go about it. This bag accompanied me through 6 weeks in Europe and another couple in Alaska some years ago, and I couldn't have asked for a better set-up. I have a used Rapha Grand Tour Cycling Gloves for sale. Size is XL. White Leather. I probably have about 10 rides on these. Have another set of gloves I prefer. So need to find a home for these guys.
