Illinois manufacturer and has their distinct star, the other one is IXI with a number but very hard to read. They could be used as bookends, doorstops or as decor. Measure aprox. 6.5"long x 3.5"wide x 5" tall- weigh about 6 lbs. each. All I can say is that I am VERY happy to use my sleek. Modern, electric iron. The model with 8 temperature settings, a blast of steam and'auto shut-off' when I forget to unplug it! I know I would not have fared well living in the 1800's! Interesting Flat irons& Sad irons facts. Blacksmiths started forging simple flat irons in the late Middle Ages. Plain metal irons were heated by a fire or on a stove. Flat irons were also called sad irons or smoothing irons. Metal handles had to be gripped in a pad or thick rag. Some irons had cool wooden handles and in 1870 a detachable handle was patented in the US. This stayed cool while the metal bases were heated and the idea was widely imitated. The sad in sad iron(or sadiron) is an old word for solid. And in some contexts this name suggests something bigger and heavier than a flat iron. You'd need at least two irons on the go together for an effective system: one in use. And one re-heating. Large households with servants had a special ironing-stove for this purpose. Some were fitted with slots for several irons, and a water-jug on top. At home. Ironing traditional fabrics without the benefit of electricity was a hot, arduous job. Irons had to be kept immaculately clean, sand-papered and polished. They must be kept away from burning fuel, and be regularly but lightly greased to avoid rusting. Beeswax prevented irons sticking to starched cloth. Constant care was needed over temperature. Here is a very nice vintage Hubley cast iron Boxer dog doorstop. It has original paint with numerous allover small scrapes and missing paint here and there as seen in photos. Please see enlarged photo for best idea of condition. I would guesstimate in the high 90's percentile of original paint intact. It is not factory marked but is indeed a Hubley USA made boxer. I have searched high and low and have not found another one to compare this one to. He is approximately 5 3/4" high and 8 3/4" long. He has very nice detail and is very well made. He is a must have for any collector. I have searched the library. My books, and the internet and could not find out who made him. He is a very exceptional and a good conversation piece. He probably will look even better with a good cleaning, I am selling him"as is" He weighs over 4 lbs. I found out that he looks extremely similar to a vintage cigarette dispenser that was made mostly in 1910 and possibly thru the 1930s but he has smooth seams and no indication he was revised so I think they may have possibly have done a run of banks as a promotion. This is a later reproduction with great paint coverage, with a flat head screw holding it together. This stands approx. 9¾" tall and 9½" wide. You can see a spot of light paint on the dog's right flank, and a minor nick on his left ear. Don't you just love his face? So sweet! You can use this as a door stop or a bank, or just to display. We found this information about Hubley Boxer Banks in an online auction: The oldest cast iron Boston Terrier or Bulldog door stops were cast by craftsmen who took pride in soft edges. Grinding them down if needed so they were smooth to the touch around the feet, ears and where the seems meet. Most old doorstops were painted on the body by airbrush, so there is almost always an overlap of paint where brown meets cream or black meets white, depending on the dog's color. If the doorstop has clear-cut distinct paint lines with no overlap. Most likely it has been repainted by someone, usually with a brush. Excellent detailing and casting. Approx. measurements are 3" tall. 5 1/4" long and 4" wide. Great preowned condition with some age appropriate corrosion. Wear and spotting to finish. As is often found, someone painted a room with him inside so he has tiny speck of white paint on him. Not sure as to the maker or origin. He looks like he has a mark on the underside of chin however I cannot make out. Really a wonderful heavy frog doorstop. Vintage items are a piece of history and always in style. Large Antique Cast Iron Standing Cat Doorstop Kitty Door Stop
Up for bids is a large solid cast iron doorstop in the likeness of a sittng cat finished with a black colored paint as pictured. I have seen these doorstops being advertised as being made by Hubley but I don't no for sure if that's who made them. It stands 12 1/4" high to the top of the ear and is 7 1/2" long across the front of the base by 2 3/4" deep from front to back. It is in nice condition with no chips or cracks to the cast iron but has some wear to the paint. There is a small bubble in the casting on the left leg made during the casting as seen in the last picture. Otherwise a very nice old cast iron piece with lots of character. Antique Art Deco Cast Iron Doorstop Borzoi Russian Wolfhound Hubley? 13 x 7 5/8"
For auction is an antique. Cast iron doorstop. The piece is unmarked but it looks very much like similar pieces made by Hubley. The piece is a Borzoi or Russian Wolfhound. The dog stands about 7 5/8" tall and is just under 13 inches from tip of the tail to the nose. It is about 2 inches wide. It is two piece cast construction and is held together by a large, flat head screw in the center of the dog's body. The paint or finish on the piece appears original to me. I have taken lots of photos to show the condition of all parts of the figure. It stands solidly and has no apparent damage. Shipping is $16.00
