The procedure is basically the same as that used by the Chinese when they first developed the process in the 2nd millennium BC. The Rubber Mold. First the artist creates an original sculpture out of any number of media. Including stone, wax, clay, wood and pottery. This image is coated with a silicone rubber molding material that makes two rubber mold halves(each rubber mold has a front and a back piece) A fiberglass outer shell is added to the back of each mold so it retains its shape and rigidity during subsequent uses. ANTIQUE 19TH CENTURY FRENCH BRONZE PORTRAIT BUST
A wonderful mid-nineteenth century French bronze bust of a young man whom I believe to be the seventeenth century French poet Jean Rotrou(1609-1650) The modelling is superb; the subject has an expressive. Slightly forlorn face, and the chasing on the hair and clothing is finely detailed. The hair is worn with a garland of laurel; the clothing is in 17th century style. Being over 150 years old, the bust has a beautiful patina, with areas of dark patination and highlights where the greenish-coloured bronze has emerged. Marks: there are no foundry or artist marks on the bust. Condition is lovely: a lustrous waxy patina with no scratches. Breaks or repairs. Measurements: 21.5 cm high x 14.5 cm wide. Up for sale is a single clown bookend with nice detail. He looks like WC Fields to me. The bookend is of a clowns head and shoulders. He is wearing a large hat and an oversized polka dot bowtie. He has stringy looking hair, make up above and below his eyes, a large nose and a double chin. It is a goldish color metal, i think brass but not positive, a magnet does not stick to the metal. The first step can be shocking for some as they begin to decide how this original will be cut up. In order to prepare the original clay sculpture for molding. It will be dissected by cutting the clay with wire and by cutting the armature with a saw. The armature is what helped support the clay in place while the artist was creating it. Note the registration marks which later in the process will serve to realign the parts. Shown here are the sections of the original clay sculpture after having been dissected. I remember it sitting on the study desk in my oldest brother’s room when I was about 7 years old(50 years ago. 1964) This could be a souvenir from Oklahoma possibly brought back to Illinois from a driving vacation taken by my aunt and uncle during the mid to late 1950’s. The piece is quality well-made. Having been cast from a non-magnetic metal given a bronze finish. Its hollow inside and is fairly heavy considering it’s only about 3 1/4”tall. It has a small crest at the bottom front of the base colored in red with OKLAHOMA printed diagonally across it. The piece is not chipped. Cracked, or broken in any way and displays very well. This is an AMAZING RARE find! This pure bronze bust of President Abraham Lincoln was cast onboard a United States Navy ship of the Atlantic Fleet. The USS Prometheus, in 1920 or 1921 soon after the end of World War I. See the black and white photo that shows the actual casting area on the ship. That is where this bronze plaque was cast. NO RESERVE! The USS Prometheus(AR-3) was a repair ship that served the United States Navy during World War I and World War II. Named after Greek mythology figure Prometheus. She was originally laid down as a collier on 18 October 1907 at the Mare Island Navy Yard, Vallejo. California; launched on 5 December 1908; and commissioned 15 January 1910 as USS Ontario(Fleet Collier No. 2) Prometheus sailed from New York on 1 September 1920 with orders to tow the USS Connecticut(BB-18) Disabled at Cuba. The Navy Sailor was Sid Engall. Who was an immigrant to the United States from Sussex, England, in the late 1890’s or early 1900’s. He was not drafted, but enlisted voluntarily into the U.S. Navy. It is his writing on the back of the plaque and the address given was his nursing home. I have included rulers in some of the images so you can see the size and thickness. The plaque is in overall good condition. With slight markings on the bronze and some scuffing on the wood, which I believe might be walnut, but I’m not entirely positive. This is as pictured a letter opener with bust of Franklin D. Roosevelt. It is just under 9 inches long and I think it is made of bronze. Condition is VERY GOOD. The front is essentially a relief(that is. It has depth, not just a painted or etched portrait) of the FDR bus and his name and design below the name while the back is flat. I have never tried to clean it so there are small, rather ordinary tarnishes or dirt residue on the opening part but no damage of any sort and particularly nothing that in any way detracts from the rather finely detailed head of President Roosevelt. All in all, this is both an exceptionally attractive item and I believe a real rarity.
