Since the hair-pipe bones were difficult and expensive to obtain, the number of bones in the plate often indicated the wealth of a warrior. Such breastplates were worn on occasion in battle, but could be penetrated easily by an arrow or a bullet, so they were mainly a decorative or medicine item. The sculpture was molded using the archaic method of lost-wax casting with skin tones finished in a brown patina stain for perpetuation. Collas Reduction mecanique: Ferdinand Barbedienne was born January 10. 1810 in St-Martin-de-Fresnay. In Calvados. At the age of 13 he went to Paris as an apprentice with a saddler. By 1833 he operated his own business on the Rue Notre Dame de Lorette. Where he eventually met and befriended Achille Collas. An artists and aspiring inventor who had invented a mechanical device that reproduced the impression of painted canvases and also an apparatus intended to mechanically reduce the size of sculpted statues. This is an important issue. And I will get back to that in a moment. In 1838. The two men founded a partnership business called?Collas& Barbedienne? and started to manufacture bronzes. They specialized in antique reproductions and developed new processes for patinations and colored bronzes. Here they would reproduce many sculptures by Barbedienne himself. As well as many others by renowned artists. Collas died in 1859. And by then Barbedienne employed some 300 workers. And produced as many as 1,200 subjects originally cast by notable artists such as Michelangelo. Bronze Bust of Abraham Lincoln Nano
Hello for sale is a bronze bust of Abraham Lincoln. The height is about 19 inches from the top of the table(bottom of base) to the top of the head. The back of the statues says NANO 96 and has 103/950. This is a very heavy statue weighs approximately 45 pounds. I am not sure what the base is made out of. A fine& rare antique documentary bronze bust by Richard Claude Belt signed and dated 1882– the reverse inscribed“BELT V LAWES. BUST OF PALIATI. EXECUTED BY BELT IN THE COURT OF COMMON PLEAS BEFORE JUDGE AND JURY 1882. AWARDED £5000 DAMAGES AND COSTS. LAWES BECAME BANKRUPT. Richard Claude Belt(1851-1920) was the son of a Westminster blacksmith who became a successful and fashionable(he moved in the Oscar Wilde set) sculptor. He exhibited at the Royal Academy 1873-1885. Charles Lawes. Another sculptor, accused him of being a fraud who got others to do his sculpting. By this time Belt had produced sculptures of the Royal family, Charles Kingsley, Lord Byron(the profitable commission for which was said to have been down to his influential friends) and other eminent figures. In 1881 he sued Lawes for libel, in the last case ever heard ... moreat the Westminster Hall. The case dragged on for 43 days and Belt called 82 witnesses to testify that he had, indeed, sculpted his own material. During the trial he evidently sculpted several busts including this one and one of the judge, Baron Huddlestone in court to demonstrate his skills. He was awarded £5,000 in damages against Lawes. Lawes, however went bankrupt as a result and it seems that Belt never received the money, driving him into financial difficulties. The subject of this bust“PALIATI” remains a mystery to me According to: Men of the Time. ANTIQUE ABRAHAM LINCOLN SOLID BRONZE BUST Measures about 3 1/2" high. Weighs about 8 ounces. It has a bent screw in the back so it was attached to some backing. Possibly something political or military. I found it in a box with items dating to the 1800s so I believe it's old. It appears to be a rough casting. Even though the face and neck are smooth, the area around the ear is slightly rough. Possibly, they were trying to make it look like hair. Otherwise, it's in VG condition with no cracks or chips.

Abraham Lincoln bust Austin Productions, stamped 1972 - 13 inch tall, bronze
Hello! This is an Austin Productions stamped bust of Abe Lincoln. Stamped 1972. It's been in my family since the 70's, and has sat on a mantle almost that entire time as far as I can remember. I know next to nothing about art and statues, etc. but after doing a bit of research my*guess* is that it's a bronze resin overlaying something: ceramic? Plaster? I don't know. There are a few chips where the"bronze" is off revealing a bit of white beneath(you can see this in the pics) It's quite heavy, sits about 13 inch tall. At times I believe my parents used it as a book end for larger books. Again, I know nothing about art. so what you see in the pics is what you get. For example, I'm not sure what that is along the neck. part of the production process? Again, I don't know. It's a bit dusty in the pics ... moreas well, sorry. Also Austin Productions seems to be a known company(again, Google and you will see the links) If anyone has any information about this which can be verified, I don't mind updating the description either. Vintage copper bronze paperweight - Tutankhamun bust on onyx marble base
Heavy weight ornamental bust of Tutankhamun on a stone base. Popular during the first quarter of the 20th century. Made of heavy solid metal that has been coated with a layer of bronze and of copper and measures 4ins tall including the half inch thick base. Some signs of wear but still in great condition, the base is slightly off center as you can see in picture 3 and has been chipped on the edges, mainly on the underside which preserves the overall look when on display.
