This is my favorite thing from this grouping. It is a rather heavy well made enameled box with a bat handle at one end. I can not open it as it appears sealed. There is something inside and a tiny bit of powdery substance came out of the top edge when I shook this. I have no idea if it is filled with incense or ashes or what. A friend tells me the symbol on the top is for eternal life. He thought it was from an object from a Buddhist shrine. Some of the original screws/bolts within the movement have been replaced with newer bolts, not original to the clock. c) the brass ormolu on the clock face. Inside the front door, is brighter than the rest, I assume it's newer than the rest. d) there are cracks on all sides in the wood and paint is missing. On the plus side the clock runs. The box is done in an intricate floral pattern referred to as Lattice or Trellis. The box is in very good condition. There are no cracks in any of the glass. All of the glass is original. The patina has a wonderful green tint and is original to the piece. There are some signs of restoration. Shows in the last four pictures. It looks to be a glue or resin. It is only located in some areas under the lower beaded trim of the box. The box measures about 7-7/8" long, 8" wide and 2-13/16" tall. The bottom is stamped with"Tiffany Studios New York. What: Old original pair of Galvano bronze clad bookends featuring The Thinker. Circa 1920's. Each bookend measures 6" tall, 3" wide, 2 5/8" deep and weighs 1.45 lbs. They are in very good vintage condition with only the felt on the bottom coming off due to old age(see pictures) One of them still has the original manufacture's stamp. These antique bookends were made using the much coveted and highly collectible bronze-clad method of production which utilized electricity via an electrode built into the plaster mold of the subject piece. Wow. These are some gorgeous English bookends. These are from my personal collection. I'm sad to see them go but I need to make some room and would love to pass these on to someone else who will enjoy them as much as I have. The griffin. Griffon, or gryphon is a legendary creature with the body of a lion and the head and wings of an eagle. The lion was traditionally considered the king of the beasts and the eagle was the king of the birds. The griffin was thought to be a powerful and majestic creature. Griffins are known for guarding treasure and possessions. Most statues have bird-like talons. Although in some older illustrations griffins have a lion's forelimbs, hindquarters and eagle's head. These bookends are English and are marked" ENGLAND" on the back of the leg and base. Now comes the question of the metal? The ... moreEnglish love their brass and could be of that metal or could be bronze. I lean somewhat towards bronze because brass turns black extremely quick and these don't have a lacquered finish and I would think they would not be this bright. Golden color. They have not been polished either. The backs and underneath the base are painted gold over the bronze which was a common practice in the early 20th century and is still done today. You can see underneath on the edge of the base the bright gold. Also, if you look at the wings they have that darkened patina that just screams bronze. I will let you make that decision but either way brass or bronze this is an old and beautiful pair! The bookends measure 7 1/2" tall by 6 1/2" round and weigh 5 pounds for the pair unpacked. They are in excellent condition with a couple of paint spatters on the base and on the wings of one. It should come off with some polish remover and have just not got around to doing so myself. This auction price is for the pair-2 sconces-as pictured. They are 19 teens-mid 1920's wall lamps with period antique solid(not cased with clear) milk opal glass shades. The sconces have been cleaned and waxed and should match rubbed bronze hardware quite well. The brass has not been painted and will only get better with time. Look closely at the pictures. There are some very minor dings and light areas in the patina. They are old not new. T he Paulding porcelain paddle switch sockets are new old stock and have a strong click that will outlast any that are currently made. They stick out 6" and the back plate is 4 x 6 inches. They are 11" from top to bottom. The ... moreembossed antique shades are period and better than any cased with clear that you see today. These shades look very good using fluorescent(which is what they are photographed with) or LED bulbs because they are opaque white. There are no flaws worth mentioning and may have some flakes on the rims. Everything is brass that shows. I added hardware, ground, and period wire. It will date to the late 1800s, it came to me through a house clearance here in the South of France, as you can see in my photo's, this chandelier is for candles, as it was originally, in approx the 1920s/1930s it was wired for electricity, but this wiring was so old and distressed. It literally d i solved in my hands. So it has been removed and put back to its original state, I still have some of the old bulb holders and faux candles from the 1920s. Antique Chinese Sheathed Bronze Knife " Invisible Dragon / Crouching Tiger"
This is a genuine antique. Chinese handmade inscribed bronze knife and sleeve, in excellent condition for its age. It has been in my family since we bought our Portland house in 1949 from a retired pharmacist, with all its contents. They traveled to Japan and China before WW II. The Chinese inscription translated(top to bottom) Lung( Invisible Dragon) Hu(Crouching Tiger) and a symbol(meaning either City or Place) see photos) Invisible Dragon. Crouching Tiger" is an old Chinese proverb, that refers to the mysteries that lie below the surface of society, and of our everyday lives. It is possible that this old Chinese piece, came from the Lung Hu mountain range area, the ancient residence of the head of the Taoist religion. This piece does not appear to be a meaningful knife. As the blade is soft, not hardened steel. It is 6 7/16" ... morelong overall, with the handle and blade 6 1/4" the sleeve 4 5/16" the blade slightly over 4" Knife is about 1/4" thick. Blade slides easily and rather snugly into the sleeve, but is not intended to be held upside down. May have been intended as a pilgrim's souvenir, perhaps a letter opener. The photos show the handmade. Detailed work of the entire piece, with a devil's head at the hilt, and a serpant facing the devil, with its body going down the sleeve. Note: the very detailed work on the handle, and the snake's hammered body. The last photo, 12, shows the irregular opening in the sleeve for the blade. I can make out PAT. on one line and date of March 2, 1878 on the second. The rest of the letters I could not make out. I have a few photos of the mark. I could not remove the oil font to see the bottom. The height is 48" without the glass bowl shade and 56" with the shade. Lamp has 3 bronze claw feet. Amd a very intricate design on the top font area. I think it is a knight on one side and king on the other in the center top The shade in in a diamond puff pattern and goes in an hombre pink to white from the top and the bottom. Handles, a gagrooned rim, and pedestals with scalloped corners and laurel wreaths. They are likely of Russian or French origin. Each is in excellent condition. Antique Vintage Masonic Bible Paperweight Brass or Bronze with small 1851 Bible
For auction is a Masonic Holy Bible Paperweight along with a small 1851 Bible as found. I found this paperweight sitting on top of this bible and felt it was appropriate to keep it together. The paperweight is made of a heavy metal that may be brass or bronze. I am not sure. A magnet will not stick to it. The paperweight is heavy and depicts an open bible with the masonic compass and square with the"G" inside. The reverse side of the paperweight is shown in picture 3. The paperweight measures 3 3/4 inches wide by 3 inches deep and stands 1 inch tall. There are no dents or chips, but it needs cleaning. The bible is interesting, because there is no identification of it as being a bible on the cover. The cover is solid black and the page edgings are gold. The pages are very tight in the bindings, and it was hard to hold it open to ... moretake these pictures. The edges of the first few pages have some small pieces missing and some of the earlier pages are folded at the tips. The Roman Numeral dating on the bottom of the page translates to 1851. The outer cover needs cleaning. The last picture shows the 4 leaf clover pressed between pages in Proverbs. I have never seen one before. But I will leave it in there for you. Please look at the pictures carefully. The item in this listing is from a collector who had vast areas of interest. He left us in 1997.
