19th C Antique Dieppe French Sculpture Carving Girl Maiden On Pedestal
I am cleaning out an estate and selling many items that I know little to nothing about so please ask lots of questions there are probably many things I am unaware of to include in a description especially on this little lady. I was told she was hand carved in a town named Dieppe in France and was brought home with a soldier after the war. i have two carvings however the other has a tiny arm missing so I thought if there is any interest in this one I may list the other if its worth the time. As far as I can see this girl looks to be in good condition. The carving is incredible the detail is unbelievable in this tiny size. I can't find any chips or breaks the only thing I see is some dirt here and there and some kind of residue on the back of the column and a tiny bit around her skirt which I have shown in the photos. They contain a lot of war news including announcements of high decorations and the like. Most interesting is the article on the"catastrophe at Dieppe" describing the ill-fated Allied raid. Several include reports on the U-boat war. There are 5 papers that appear to be complete and a 6th that is the front page only. All are in good condition and show wear.
