Antique WOOD FREEMAN Metal Marine Automatic Pilot 1937 Navigation Nautical
A rare opportunity to own one of the earliest known Wood Freeman Metal Marine Automatic Pilots manufactured and patented by Wood Freeman of Fircrest. WA. in 1937. It is possible this instrument was a prototype as there is no serial number though the first-known patent date is showing. This automatic compass navigation guidance control is showing Aug 10. 1937 patent date and upon research is the first known filing for this instrument. Further research shows the device was invented in 1935. And the patent was filed in 1935 finally issued on Aug 10, 1937. The compass housing measures 6.25" across and the total depth is 3.5" No bubbles in the liquid. Compass has been stored under the same bed for over 50 years. A brass. Three-axis gimbal allows it to be suspended from above, horizontally or from below. The electrical tape securing the ... morewires on the yoke appears to have been in place for many years. Wood Freeman autopilot in working condition. This unit is very solid. It was usually the last thing to break in a fisherman's boat. It is nicknamed"iron mike" but its really over 60 pounds of cast bronze, and stainless chain. The compass part is a really nice conversation piece. No computer in this baby, they started making these in the 1920's. This one came out of a 100 year old doug fir hulled tug boat before she was broken up. All the pieces are there!

Steering Motor for Wood Freeman Autopilot
Wood-Freeman(WF) autopilots are probably the most reliable autopilots ever produced. They are straightforward and the electronics can be serviced with components one can buy at. Say, RadioShack. The problem is that Metal Marine, Inc(that manufactured and serviced the Wood Freeman) is no longer in business. Knowing this, I bought up parts for the WF- including this steering motor, which was very hard to find. Well, I'm now selling the boat, the old Wood Freeman still works like a champ and I have no need of a spare steering motor. Perhaps someone out there in EBAYland could use it.
