Diameter of the compass is 5 1/2" and definitely is in working condition. The wooden box is tongue and groove and has cover. Compass is as found and has not been cleaned. With a little research I was able to determine. I think, that this item dates to the 1930's. Please look at my pictures carefully so that you can fully evaluate it's condition. This c1947 Ship's Compass was made by E.S. Ritchie& Sons Inc. in Boston. Mass. and has a 7" diameter dial. It is serial number 106673. This nice size American Made Compass is complete with its gimbal ring and box. The compass is moving and points north properly. I believe it still contains its fluid. The compass has been in storage for many years and will need a good cleaning. The wood box will need some attention but should restore nicely. The compass has a 7" diameter glass lens and is approximately 8 5/16" in diameter. It is approximately 11 1/4" outside to outside of the yoke supports. Found at a local Estate Sale. Was this Fabulous Old Boxed Compass. Do take a look at all photos! Brass Compass is liquid filled and is Gimble Supported inside a Wood Box. The Box measures 8x8x5.5 and I believe the wood to be Teak. Box is put together by nails on sides and bottom, while the top is beveled to slide in and out of a Groove, with a little indent on top to pull by finger. The front of box has the makers black metal plate securely attached by small nails. Plate reads.SUNSTAR LIQUID COMPASS Size A2 SS 4 Osaka Japan Distributed by J.H. GICHNER. This compass is truly Wonderful and in very good condition. Not being sure of how much water would normally be in a item like this, I can't say whether there has been some loss or not! Old Brass Compass & Level Encased in Wood
This item is a vintage brass compass with a brass level encased in a piece of oak wood. The compass itself measures 2" inches in diameter. The small brass level measures 1.5" inches in length. The block of wood measures 2.25" by 4.5" by.75" inches. This compass is in good condition and still works. I can't find a maker's name on this item. I guess if was took apart I could find a name. I believe this item dates to around the 1940's or 1950's. I purchased it with some WW2 items. I 95% certain it isn't one of those recent reproductions of brass compasses. For bid is a vintage ships compass in a wooden box. It has"Chicago Airguide.USA" around the top of the compass. It has a electric cord and a light bulb inside the compass. It's mounted on metal tabs on the inside. I think it's supposed to have air or water or something on the inside of the glass or plastic dome but there is a little crack in the dome so I would guess that would need replaced. It still spins around but I honestly don't know what it's supposed to have or how it's supposed to work so it's being sold"as is' whatever that is. Vintage or Antique Wilcox Crittenden& Co Ship's Maritime Binnacle Compass in Wooden Box. This is a great looking antique Ship's or Lifeboats Binnacle Compass in the original wooden box. The compass was made by Wilcox Crittenden& Co. Wilcox-Crittenden produced marine equipment at their Middletown. Connecticut facility for many years. The Wilcox name is again in use, but the old firm closed years ago. This is the classic WC compass the old company produced into the 1960s. I am sorry I do not know the exact year it was made. On the bottom of the compass bowl are numbers that are probably a date code. This number is what appears to be P403. The compass is three inches across the top in a blackened bronze compass bowl. We were informed that the Compass bowls were usually made of bronze with a flat painted or darkened finish to ... moreminimize glare. And for ease of maintenance. The finish often wears off after a few years, but the blackening on this instrument is still in original condition. We were told the compass has been drained for storage but works well. We do not know how to fill the compass so we have no way of confirming this. In what appears to be good condition for its age. The compass sits in a dove tail constructed wood box that is 4.75" x 4.75" and is 3.5" tall. It appears to have its original finish and still has the two side latches. This looks to be an older/vintage. Metal.I'm not sure of the type of metal. brass or copper? maybe. The lighting and flash really picked up a lot of dusty particles and places that aren't visible with the naked eye. It is mounted in a wood box. The wood box has a gold color inlay on the corners and the top has a gold color ship's steering wheel and corner type frames around it. I noticed some spotting on the front of the box but might polish out. There's a little metal latch on the front. After purchasing from an estate, on the way home, I got to test the compass and it seems to be in good working order. The wood/en box it's in measures approximately 4 1/2 inches side to side and approximately the same front to back and stands approximately 3 1/4 inches tall with the lid/top closed. Late 18th Century British Wood Cased Pocket Compass c. 1785
British oak-cased pocket compass with elaborate compass rose. Fleur-de-lys, all original. Needle rotates freely, points north. Device for securing needle when in transit. Brass parts oxidized but in good condition. Glass is rippled and appears to be original. Very nice paper label. No maker. Missing one tiny nail(of 16) holding the hinges into place. Slight crack in cover. Case is 3 1/8" square and 15/16" tall. Dial is 2 5/8" All in all a very nice late 18th Century compass.

Antique Vintage FLOATING BRASS Binnacle COMPASS IN WOOD BOX; Boat Ship Nautical
Up for grabs is an older floating brass compass in a lidded walnut box. I am not sure the exact age of this compass as I got it from a friend who got it from someone else. The compass itself looks to be in good working order. And the box is in excellent shape. The compass does show a little wear which you can see in the pictures. Also the screws that hold the compass may need a tiny bit of adjusting, if you think it needs it(just takes a flat head screwdriver) I'm not sure how it is supposed to be but it can be tightened and loosened from the sides. Nice nautical inlay on the box making this a nice display piece if it was not in use. The walnut box measures 6" X 6" X 4" and the compass itself is 4" in diameter. Presented is a Sestrel hand bearing compass originally designed and made by Henry Browne& Co. Barking, London England. This compass is arguably the finest of its type ever designed as a hand bearing device. The optical glass prism magnifies the image, and allows the user to see both the object being sighted and the compass card bearing at the same time. An iridium chip beneath the card was used to light it for night use and needs replacement. A penlight flashlight is a good alternative.
