Compasses of this size and design were often used as a backup compass or in a lifeboat. This unit is made of brass and mounted in a 5¾” square x 4¼' deep mahogany dove tail case and lid with brass hardware. The 3” compass card is signed with an interlaced"WC" Which indicates it was built by the prestigious WILCOX CRETTEDEN COMPANY based in Connecticut. It seems to read accurately but has lost some liquid(distilled water) Which is probably due to evaporation as there doesn't appear to be a leak.The missing liquid caused some distortion in the photos that looked like cracked glass. The wood case is 4.75" on each side and 3.25" to the top of the compass. 3-7/8" tall with the case lid on. Great face on this compass. The fluid has not been replaced and still looks quite clear. Maker of this compass is Wilcox Criittenden& Co. The glass is intact on the compass. The lid to the case does has some finish issues to it. But no cracks or splits in the wood. 60 year old Wilcox @ Crittenden, brass boat/ship compass w/ full box
This is a 60 year old Wilcox and Crittenden brass compass approx. 3" in diameter. Box is approx. 4 3/4" square. Compass and gimbal still have original black paint on them in good shape. It appears that both are brass and should be a very nice brass compass if you should remove paint. There is a label inside from Wilcox and Crittenden with a date of Mar 5. 1953. This compass does not hold oil. I opened and found the glass in very good condition and the seal in place. I assume that due to the age of the seal, it no longer seals properly. Vintage 1945 Made in the Good'Ol USA marine compass. The lens cracked and the fluid leaked out but this is one of those good ones that deserves a rebuild and not"the toss" Still spins freely and finds magnetic north without hesitation. Box is tight. Top slides in and out freely. 2 1/4" face, 3 3/4" o.d. on the mount pegs and 2" deep.

This is a WWII vintage bronze gimbaled Wilcox Crittenden life boat compass. It seems to be working as it should. The box measures 4 1/2 inches square. And about 3 3/8 inches tall. Vintage or Antique Wilcox Crittenden& Co Ship's Maritime Binnacle Compass in Wooden Box. This is a great looking antique Ship's or Lifeboats Binnacle Compass in the original wooden box. The compass was made by Wilcox Crittenden& Co. Wilcox-Crittenden produced marine equipment at their Middletown. Connecticut facility for many years. The Wilcox name is again in use, but the old firm closed years ago. This is the classic WC compass the old company produced into the 1960s. I am sorry I do not know the exact year it was made. On the bottom of the compass bowl are numbers that are probably a date code. This number is what appears to be P403. The compass is three inches across the top in a blackened bronze compass bowl. We were informed that the Compass bowls were usually made of bronze with a flat painted or darkened finish to ... moreminimize glare. And for ease of maintenance. The finish often wears off after a few years, but the blackening on this instrument is still in original condition. We were told the compass has been drained for storage but works well. We do not know how to fill the compass so we have no way of confirming this. In what appears to be good condition for its age. The compass sits in a dove tail constructed wood box that is 4.75" x 4.75" and is 3.5" tall. It appears to have its original finish and still has the two side latches. This is a beautiful antique gimbaled 1930 Wilcox Crittenden Bronze boat compass in excellent original working condition. The lidded mahogany colored box is lock jointed. This is an old 1936 Wilcox Crittenden bronze box compass in excellent original condition. The glass is clear and the card is clear. Unstained and very readable. This is the large size. The mahagony colored wood box measures 5 3/4 inches square. Keep your classic sailboat or power boat all bronze! These are very reliable and very attractive compasses. VINTAGE WILCOX CRITTENDEN MARITIME GIMBALLED COMPASS IN BRASS RETICULE (RARE)
You are looking at a very fine example of the Wilcox Crittenden Maritime Gimballed Compass contained in a brass reticule. This compass seems to point in the right direction and I see no bubbles. The compass and gimball were painted black at one time and it is starting to chip away revealing very nice brass. There is also an N and an arrow scratched into the paint on the compass. This compass has seen some use. The family that owned it had a fleet of small sailboats so a portable compass was used frequently. The bottom of the compass shows"Made in USA" and the numbers 4-30. There is no date but I believe it is from the 30"s. The Container measures 3 1/2" H X 4" in diameter. Compass is 3" diameter. I have seen many Crittenden ships compasses in teak boxes but I cannot seem to locate another in a brass container ... moreso I think this model is very rare. There are a few small dings in the container and the compass seems to tilt slightly. May just need some adjustment. The box measures 5 3/4" L x 5 3/4" W x 4 1/4" H. The compass has a 3" wide glass and frame measures 4" the depth inside box of the compass is 2 1/2" the balance ring is 4 3/4" OD across the inside of the box. The box looks like mahogany. Top of box is a bit darker due to years of storage and has nails showing. Has 2 screw and J hooks to hold top down. Continential USA sale only. Box is in good condition. Compass shows some wear. The label on the inside of the box shows has the date of Feb. 12. 1932. This was in a private fishing boat that used to be moored in Newport, Oregon. The box is 4 3/4 in by 4 3/4 in square and 3 1/2 tall with the lid on. It is 2 3/4 in tall without the lid. The glass face of the compass has a diameter of 2 1/8 in. The compass does work(that is. It still seeks magnetic north)

The compass is in great working order. It is encased in a box measuring 5 1/4" x 5 1/4" x 3 3/4" The box shows some wear as shown in pictures.

Mid- 1900’s 3” Magnetic Compass mounted in a 3¾” gimbal ring. Compasses of this size and design were often used as a backup compass or in a lifeboat. This unit is made of brass and mounted in a 4¾” square x 3½" deep dove tail case and NO lid(The Lid is missing) The 2¼” compass card is signed with an interlaced"WC" Which indicates it was built by the prestigious WILCOX CRITTENDEN COMPANY based in Connecticut. It seems to point in the right direction and is NOT full of oil. WWII ERA WILCOX, CRITTENDEN & CO, MIDDLETOWN, CT GIMBALED BOXED SHIP COMPASS
A nice find from the estate of a WWII Navy Veteran. This solid brass compass was made by Wilcox. Crittenden& Co, Middletown, Ct. It comes in a nice wooden joined box(see photo detail) that appears to be maple. It has a slide top which is missing the right slide portion which fits into the groove, but it still slides nicely and holds when closed. The top also has some wear as seen in photo close up, but I think this can be touched up. The compass maintains its original black finish with just a few chips and its wooden case has its original brown lacquer finish. It is liquid filled and in excellent working condition. Please note that the line seen across the glass in the compass is not a crack, it is the bubble in the liquid. Great antique/vintage gimballed ship/nautical compass. Larger size. Original mahogany box is 9x9x5 3/4 high. Glass is 5 1/8 and outside ring is 7 1/2. It is made to be easily removed from the case and mounted on the ship. Well used and working. Because of the large size is was shurely from a working vessell. Heavy-just the instrument weighs in at almost 10 lbs. Early piece made by Wilcox Crittenden in Middletown. Conn. In original"as found" condition, not cleaned or tinkered with. Great patina. No major issues, just a great time worn piece of nautical history. No reserve.

Here is a 1947 Wilcox Crittenden Compass in a fiberglass mount for a ship helm. This Compass has date markers on the underside(please see photos) and moves freely within it's gyroscope. Has W.C. monogram in place of"N" monogram for north. I can not confirm that the fiberglass mount is original. As I have yet to find another example. Compass has excellent patina and matte finish. This is a remarkably well preserved"1920" Wilcox Crittenden Co. Ship Compass. In picture#2. You can clearly see Wilcox Crittenden Trade Mark at the 7 o'clock position or on the North mark. In picture#5& 6 you can clearly see how well the case has been preserved. If you notice hook latches are even correct and intact. Lid fits properly, one way only. Which leads us to believe it was hand made. Of course in this condition all is working fine. As you can see in picture#4, last service was on 7-10-1930. It measures approx. 5 1/4" squared x approx. 3 1/2" tall. Again it has been extremely well taken care of. We have not so much of dusted it off after acquired. All we have done is sit beside other working compass to make sure it was still calibrated correctly. We will take extreme care in packing for shipping. It will ... morebe double boxed and insured. This is a very nice antique Wilcox Crittenden Co. Nautical Maritime Ship Compass. It has the Wilcox Crittenden Trade Mark( WC) between the NW and NE on the face of the compass. It is a wonderful bronze with a very nice aged verdigris patina. It works great. It has been mounted on a hand crafted cedar wood stand that is very charming for displaying it. In fact I have never seen another like it. Bottom of compass shows 4-30 MADE IN USA. No markings on container. Measures 4 1/2" W X 4" lid on. In very good condition. A few bumps and imperfections to the container but very little considering age and type of use it has gotten. Black paint over the brass on the Compass. This paint is chipping away from the brass and there is a spot where someone scratched N with an arrow in the paint. Compass seems to work fine. When sitting level. Compass seems to list a bit. This is a WW2 era 1938 manufactured gimbaled compass. Made by Wilcox& Crittenden of Middletown. Connecticut. I researched this compass on google images. I found this same type and manufacturer on Smithsonian website. Similar one was used by Waldemar Semenov and his U.S. Merchant Marine shipmates to guide their lifeboat toward Florida after a German submarine sank their ship in the Atlantic, April 1942. This gimbaled compass is missing mahogany box. Compass is in very good working condition.

Vintage Wilcox & Crittenden Gimballed Marine Brass Compass
This is a Vintage Gimballed Wilcox& Crittenden Marine Compass. It was made in Middletown Conn. It has the WC logo at the north point. It has the date 1/54 stamped in the bottom. The compass and the gimball mount are brass. It is 4 inches across. This is an oil filled compass but some of the oil needs to be replaced as there is a large air bubble inside. This is not a problem as you can buy compass oil at places like West Marine or other nautical supply stores. There is a brass screw on the side for refilling(see photo) It needs a wedge type mount to put it on your boat but it is not included. West Marine can probably provide you with one of those too. The top glass is clean. This is in good condition. I am selling this and a bunch of other antique tools for a serious collector so I don’t know the history or other data about each item ... moreother than as described. Circa WWII. This 4" gimbaled dry card boat compass is made by Wilcox. Crittenden& Co. Middletown, Conn. U.S.A. and has the WC logo at the north point. The compass is engraved with the"MADE IN U.S.A. on the bottom of the black-painted compass body. Wilcox-Crittenden produced marine equpment at their Middletown. Connecticut facility for many years. The Wilcox name is again in use, but the old firm closed years ago. It has"51-1" stamped on the bottom of the compass. It has a four-inch(10 cm) card in a blackened bronze five-inch compass bowl. Compass bowls are usually made with a flat painted or darkened finish to minimize glare, and for ease of maintenance. The finish often wears off after a few years, but the blackening on this instrument is still in original condition. Works great No bubbles/leaks. Original paint and as it came from manufacture A fine example of a mid 20th century gimbaled boat compass in dovetailed maple box made by Wilcox, Crittenden& Co. Middletown, Conn. U.S.A. Completely original and retaining it's label on the inside of the lid. The machine dovetailed mahogany box measures 6 X 6 X 4 1/2 inches with double brass swing hook clasps to secure the lid to the compass box. The compass was made by Wilcox Crittenden and it has a really neat angled case. The case opens at two spots and the compass on the inside sits on a gyro mechanism to stay flat. Antique Vintage Wilcox Crittenden Gimballed Ship Nautical Compass in Wooden Box
Fine old nautical gimballed compass by Wilcox Crittenden suspended in a wooden box with finger joints. The inside bottom of the box contains the complete green Wilcox Crittenden label. The glass cover of the compass is approximately 2" in diameter. The suspension and case are most likely brass. Painted black. A magnet does not stick to the metal. The box is approx 4 5/8" square and 3 3/4" tall. the top of the box slides in and out. The compass is in working condition with no damage. The brass shows signs of use and age with slight nicks and an uneven patina. The glass is clear and not cloudy as one of my pictures might suggest. The box is sturdy. Vintage Working "Bronze" Box Compass- Wilcox Crittenden- Excellent Condition
Wilcox Crittenden of Middletown. Connecticut made small box compasses and"dory" compasses for many years. This one is from the early 20th century and likely made This one is in excellent condition. NO BUBBLES! Very good quality. This appears to be bronze as it isn't yellow like brass. Features gimbaled rings inside a dovetailed wooden box(5"x5"x3 1/2" Pair of brass swing clasps hold the lid shut. This is a clean and fine WORKING example for the nautical collector.

Antique WIlcox & Crittenden Large Nautical Box Compass & US Power Squadrons Card
You're bidding on a large Nautical Compass- no other markings. But the Wilcox& Crittenden logo appears on the face of the compass card at the"North" position- box is 7 1/2" square and 5" deep, and the compass face is 5" diameter. It's a gyroscopic compass with a wet mechanism, in very good functional condition. The box has a nice antique appearance and appeal- it appears that the lid would be secured closed by hooks on either side, but one of the hooks is missing- lid stays securely and tightly shut, though, even if you do not use the one hook that's present. I'm guessing this to be at the latest 1920s vintage piece based on the presence of an instruction card for use of the compass provided by the United States Power Squadrons, that lists an address on the back that was in use by the organization ... morein the mid 1920s. The USPS, a nautical safety and educational organization, was founded in 1914 and still operates today as the largest non-profit boating organization- not sure if this compass was issued by the organization or not but the card inserts perfectly into the box lid. The compass housing is black-painted metal, probably copper- it has a few spots of green tarnish, but solid and functional. Nice working nautical historical piece- please review photos carefully to make your own determination of overall condition and appeal. This auction consists of a Wilcox Crittenden compass in a wooden box.I received some info from the company.They never made a compass like this but they did feel that is was modified for sail boat racing early 1900's.It measures about compass itself 4 in. in diameter.The box is 5 3/4 in.sq. by 4 in.
