800x600 This is an exceptionally well made Weems& Plath boat compass contained within a wooden box. The compass measures approx. 4” across and 3 ½” tall. The compass was made in Japan and is beautifully constructed. We compared this to a compass app on an I-phone and it appears to be right on the money for direction. It also has a magnifier on a swivel hinge. The bottom has an opening for an internal light and a brass fitting to allow mounting to a bulkhead or a tripod. Antique Weems & Plath Handbearing Compass with wooden box
Antique Weems& Plath Hand Bearing Compass Comes with fitted wooden box. Made in Japan Items in very nice condition for both use and display. Appears to have not been used. Little surface wear. The battery compartment is clean and contains both red and clear bulbs for the light. Both bulbs work- see picture of clear bulb working. Sorry but won't ship with batteries. The prism looks good. I checked the compass with my known directions and points to my local magnetic North. South, East and West. The box is built using dovetails. It has a carry handle and small latch. There is an ON/OFF switch on the backside of the box to turn the light on and a small viewing window on the front. So that user can view the compass without opening the box. Condition of finish on box is good. Box has small 3 inch split in wood on back side below the switch(see ... morelast picture) I am helping my Mom clean out her house. She found this in a closet. When I asked where she got it. She didn't remember. My father was in the Coast Guard and it may have come from that time. BUT, I don't know any official history or provenance.
