Overall the brass case diameter would take a cover that is 12 inches in diameter. The binnacle is currently 11 inches in height, the glass dome is 7 inches in diameter. It probably once sat on a large wood round pedestal and had a brass cover to protect it. It does have a date of 1899 on it so it is probably made then or a little after. It is fantastic quality and in excellent working condition. There is no damage or repairs. It is a heavy duty well made piece. Found in storage. Looks to be pretty beat up, but may be able to be rebuilt. I don't know the history of this piece. Rim says Kelvin White Constellation Pat 2428346 CB8935. Compass rose says Danforth Constellation and has chip in paint at SE position. No globe. Made of solid brass. Base cover has crack. Actual compass seems intact. Large Vintage Ship Compass. Danforth White Express. Portland. 7" Base. 7" Tall
A huge old vintage boat compass in nice working condition. Black metal housing. Gyro style compass, not water filled. Adjustable for accuracy. The shade hood moves over the top to shield the sun for easy reading, and there is a light built into the hood for night time. Not sure exactly how the light hooks up, but the wiring is there. Very heavy, weighing almost 7 pounds. Mounting base is 7" and in good condition. Dome is in nice condition with minimal wear. Manufactured by Danforth White in Portland Maine USA. The hood metal looks like it had a hairline crack, but the repair is almost invisible unless you look really close. Hood operates as it should, looks to be a professional repair. Vintage Danforth Express Large Boat/Ship Compass
This compass was at the helm of a 1966 48' Chris Craft Constellation. The compass is approximately 7 1/2" tall and 6 1/2" in diameter. It has a few scuffs as any item of this age would. I am not sure if it was original to the 1966 boat or if it is older. The numbers stamped on the rim are PAT. 2428346 CB24518. There are wires that are going up into the top moveable hood of the compass. I think these are for a light but I am not sure. It could use a good cleaning but its a great piece as is.
