This is a very old brass sun dial on a wooden stand. The diameter of the round rings are 17" and the wooden base is 8" high. The brass rings are very heavy. This was purchased at an estate auction. The auctioneer said it was together and when they touched it it came apart and we can't figure out how it goes together. Not sure if there should be more parts. Vintage Mariner Nautical Pelorus Compass Sun Dial Decorative Piece HEAVY 11"
I know VERY little to nothing about this piece. I do believe it to be old and at one time was possibly on a big ship. It measures approx. 11 1/4 inches in diameter and approx. 1/4 inch thick. It appears to be made of iron? maybe steel? it is very heavy for it's size. The back is a gray blue and the piece has two holes in it, one larger than the other. There are 3"stamps" on the back. The two round markings have a series of letters in them, the top(I believe) has a 4 at top C to the left and W to the right. I cannot make out the bottom round markings. The long bar type stamp has CW 23-9 in it. The front of the piece is black with the blue gray color showing through the markings. The center of the disc is a compass, the next ring are straight markings and the outer ring consists of roman numerals and a scroll design. There are ... morea few light surface scratches and a wee bit of rust here and there, but overall the piece is in nice condition. I don't know if this was a Pelorus, part of a compass, a sun dial or even just a decorative piece.but it's a beautiful piece.
