There is no maker name on the compass only a small stamp of"S P 5" on the bottom. Liquid filled. The card has very nice markings with fleur-de-lis at 0 degrees N and additionally a crown motif in the inner ring and operates clean and smoothly as intended. The card is in excellent condition and so is the glass which is remarkably clear and has no visible scratches. Any blemishes are photo reflection. shows a thin'gunk' ring where the glass/metal meet probably from a sealant that attracted some grime. No leaks, air bubbles, etc. Compass face ring has two markings: ... morePATT. 0183 and No. 18937.H. Small dig in gimbal ring(visible in the photo) and some screws show screwdriver'slop' These type compasses would have originally been housed in a binnacle and most that I've seen with this type of card were of European or English origin, but I cannot warrant that, I'm not an expert. A very nice operable nautical antique. Measures 6" across the face and about 6 ½ across the gimbal ring, wt = 12 lbs. Enjoy. Great antique/vintage gimballed ship/nautical compass. Larger size. Original mahogany box is 9x9x5 3/4 high. Glass is 5 1/8 and outside ring is 7 1/2. It is made to be easily removed from the case and mounted on the ship. Well used and working. Because of the large size is was shurely from a working vessell. Heavy-just the instrument weighs in at almost 10 lbs. Early piece made by Wilcox Crittenden in Middletown. Conn. In original"as found" condition, not cleaned or tinkered with. Great patina. No major issues, just a great time worn piece of nautical history. No reserve.

VINTAGE ANTIQUE VERY OLD GIMBALLED SHIP MARITIME BRASS COMPASS THE REAL DEAL
I can't find much information on this old compass. I bought it at an estate sale and as far as I can see. There are no markings on it anywhere to tell who made it or when. I can tell you that it is very very old and very unique. I have looked at hundreds of others on ebay and on the internet and I can't find one like it with the brass bubbled centerpiece in the middle of the compass. There is a sort of"coat of arms" on the compass itself that might identify it. You can see there has been some old repair work done, but overall the piece is in great condition. Original curved glass is still good with only a few chips around the edges that are hidden when the brass ring in on. The bolts to the brass ring have been replaced, but the ones they replaced them with don't screw down all the way. Would need to be tapped and re-threaded, ... moreso I will leave them as is and maybe you can find the exact old bolts. I believe one of them is an original(See photo on them in my hand, it is the longer one and was in the ring when I bought it) This is about 5 1/4" wide and about 4 inches tall. It is really heavy for it's size at just over 4 pounds. If you look at ebay for these you will see lots and lots of new knock offs of this compass, but this is the real deal. This is the one they copied.

Fine old nautical gimballed compass by Wilcox Crittenden suspended in a wooden box with finger joints. The inside bottom of the box contains the complete green Wilcox Crittenden label. The glass cover of the compass is approximately 2" in diameter. The suspension and case are most likely brass. Painted black. A magnet does not stick to the metal. The box is approx 4 5/8" square and 3 3/4" tall. the top of the box slides in and out. The compass is in working condition with no damage. The brass shows signs of use and age with slight nicks and an uneven patina. The glass is clear and not cloudy as one of my pictures might suggest. The box is sturdy.
