For your consideration. We have a very old SHIP'S GIMBAL COMPASS as shown. The dial is in good condition and has DIRIGO COMPASS& INSTRUMENT AUBURN, WN USA printed on it. The compass measures 4" in diameter. It looks like solid bronze with the housing and the bracket. The liquid filled compass still works good, although there is some green algae looking stuff on the glass inside.The box is in good condition and has machine dove tail joints, no lid for it though. Fine looking gimbal maritime compass in a 6x6x3.5in rich wooden casing(that appears to be oak) with dove-tail construction. One corner is slightly worn and there is a slight nick by one of the screws. It also appears to have had a slide-on cover at one time. Mechanism is fully functional and compass itself is gorgeous and in full working order. Brass casing has"E. S. RITCHIE AND SONS 78637 BOSTON" engraved on it. Compass face is undamaged but has some tiny iron filings adhering to the north face.

Up for your holiday bidding pleasure. A great late 19th Century/ early 20th Century ship’s gimbal compass in its original wood case! I purchased this great piece right outside of Gloucester, Massachusetts, right after college, and so that was many, many years ago. For those of you who may remember, Gloucester is the little maritime community where the crew of the swordfishing boat Andrea Gail was from, all made famous by the movie"Perfect Storm" with George Clooney. At the time, an old timer had just sold a lot of his items to this small antique shop and I happened to be there to pick up this nice piece right after he left. Interestingly. And I didn’t learn this until many years later, the old timer actually had a fine compass there! The compass card is marked“Sestrel” which is the trade mark brand of Henry Browne& Son who were ... moreimportant British compass makers(London and Barking, England) in the 19th and 20th century. And so the old timer actually owned what is in fact an excellent scientific instrument! The compass is liquid filled and operates just fine. It is in its original wood case which is hand-inked on underside. SULA Shoreham A. Bryan Shoreham 4495. The same name is also hand-engraved into the back of the compass. My guess is that the compass also used to“live” on a boat(maybe named Sula? in New Shoreham, Rhode Island, which has the distinction of being the smallest town in the smallest state. The Shoreham municipality encompasses the entire geographic area of Block Island, an island of just under 10 square miles located approximately 12 miles south of mainland Rhode Island across Block Island Sound. Block Island was also known as Manisses(the Little God’s Island) by the Narragansett Indians. The compass card is about 3 inches wide. And the black painted metal compass is about 4 inches. The case is about 5 inches square. The condition is great, with no damage and only light wear- the only condition to note is a good and small repair to the wood case, which you can see in the photos. Ships, yachts and homes along the Maine coast. This is an old Sestrel Dead Beat No. 2983N. 10" compass(8" face) also marked Henry Browne& Sons Ltd, Type No. 8899. The compass has long ago been retired from sea service and now mounted on gimbals supported by two smiling, happy mythical brass dolphins and a wooden grate. It has old patina and is unpolished. The only issue I could find is a small chip missing in one dolphin's tail support. Look for my finger pointing at it in one picture. There are also some minor scratches in the wooden. Appears to be in good condition and seems to function properly.
