This is a very old vintage ships liquid compass. It is made by E S Ritchie& Sons SS# 66623- BOSTON. Works great and was sold by T S& J D. NEGUS New York. Antique E.S. Ritchie& Sons Nautical Compass w/ weathered mahogany box due to salvaging from ship at sea. I live in New Bedford, the whaling city, and this was taken from one of the old whaling boats from our historical museum auction. I do not know the name of the whaling ship, buy it was circa 1800s. Box is 11" sq and compass in about 8" wide diameter/ swivel in great working condition. A fine piece to add to any nautical collectors home. I am delighted to offer you this excellent early 20th century brass compass on multi directional Gimbal by one of the very best names in Maritime Instruments E.S. Ritchie& Sons of Boston. It is in working order. It is 8" wide at the inner ring and 10" wide total and 5" tall total. I am especially proud to offer one of E.S. Antique 1920's? E S Ritchie & Sons Boston New York Maritime Ships Compass
Old ship compass by ES Ritchie and Sons. Boston. The compass is also marked New York but that is probably where it was sold. May be from the 1920's but that is just a guess. The serial number is 81647. Tried to find a serial number/date chart on the net but could not come up with one. The compass pivots on its brass or bronze gimbal. The hardwood box has wear to the old finish but is generally in good condition and displays well. I believe it to be original to the compass. The little chrome light above the compass has corrosion as would be expected. The compass itself has a faded dial, some flaky paint coming off of the bottom and I don't see any fluid in it although it does seem to work. Late 19th Century Ship's Dry Compass by E.S. Ritchie& Sons of Boston. ARTIFACT: This is a late 19th century ship’s dry compass made by E.S. Ritchie& Sons of Boston. Massachusetts. The compass face is in black and white with handsome diamond and triangle details throughout. The compass has a detachable wooden base with two numbers painted on it in duplication: 90510 and A-26-3. There is also an affixed metal tag stamped 90510 on the base and the same number is also stamped directly into the wood. VINTAGE: Circa late 19th century. SIZE: Approximately 4-1/4” height and 13” diameter. CONSTRUCTION/MATERIALS: Glass. Painted wood(some areas have painted lettering) plated brass tag, iron. ATTACHMENT: N/A. ANTIQUE E.S. RITCHIE& SONS BOSTON SHIPS COMPASS#95975 in COPPER BINNACLE VTG Condition: It is in Used but Good Condition considering the age of the item. The compass operates perfectly and moves about freely within the binnacle. The glass on the top of the compass is a bit fogged and there are some beads of water stuck to the top. The copper binnacle has seen better days- the top handle is not connected on one side. There is a screw missing from the front lower fastening which holds the glass in place. There is a piece of tape stuck to the glass front. The copper has oxidized over time as well and there is some patina throughout the case. Please see photos for better feel on overall condition. Description: This is a beautiful antique brass. E.S. RITCHIE& SONS Boston compass#95975 encased in a copper binnacle box with a glass window ... moreand side compartment which I believe was a kerosene lamp holder so the compass could be read at night. The lamp holder has an opening door and small drawer which slides out and still contains extra parts! The compass looks great. Moves about and is totally functional. It is marked as E.S. RITCHIE& SONS and says BOSTON on the outer rim which also contains the serial number 95975. The center of the compass reads“New York” and“Negus” The glass on the top of the compass is a bit fogged and there are some beads of water stuck to the top. The copper binnacle. Unfortunately, does not have any markings so I don’t know the year or make. As I mentioned in the description, it has seen better days and there are several problems The binnacle is approx 9.5” tall and about 8” across including the side lamp holder. Built very sturdy.
