This is a ES Ritchie compass in a box. The compass was probably made in the late 1800's. Has dates ranging from 1868 to 1876(pictured) Not sure what they are for. Looks like someone tried to restore it previously. It has some blemishes and is not perfect but is in decent shape. Compass seems to function normally but I am no expert. I do not know if the box is original but appears to have age. Sold as is with no warrnaty expressed or implied.

NO RESERVE! Vintage Used E.S. Ritchie Compass and Brass Binnacle from"The Liberty Belle" Paddlewheel Riverboat. Which still operates dinner cruises on the Delaware River in Philadelphia. The Liberty Belle was built in Biloxi, Mississippi in 1958, and I was told this had been ship's equipment removed when the boat was refitted years ago. The hooded brass binnacle stands 9 inches tall, by 7-1/8 inches in diameter, and the glass compass dome measures about 5" in diameter across the bottom. Compass has some scratches on the glass dome. Dial light works when hooked up to a 12 volt battery. Comes with extra nameplate, bolts, and washers in plastic bag not shown in my pictures. This nice size American Made Compass is complete with its gimbal ring and box. The compass is moving and points north properly. I believe it still contains its fluid. The compass has been in storage for many years and will need a good cleaning. The wood box will need some attention but should restore nicely. I have a 8 1/2" gimbaled compass is numbered 64836& E.S. Ritchie. Boston. It says Sold by T.S. J.D. Negus New York. It is brass. My info came from the Smithonian website on navigation instruments. The compass is engraved on the rim E.S. Ritchie Boston. The business he began in 1850 was E. S. Ritchie& Son in 1866 and E. S. Ritchie& Sons in 1867. And moved from Boston to Brookline in 1886. Based on this information I thought it was safe to say 1866. In actual fact it is most likely older than that because it isn't marked with& Son or& Sons. Also, It doesn't have any numbers along the edge of compass card. is some history on T.S. J.D. Negus and E.S. Ritchie: Ritchie Edward Samuel Ritchie(1814-1895) was the most innovative instrument maker in nineteenth century America. Making important contributions to both science ... moreand navigation. Fresh estate find. Very Impresssive Ship Compass! This vintage Ship's Compass was made by E.S. Ritchie& Sons Inc. in Boston. Mass. and has a 6 3/4" diameter dial. Serial number 57751. Manufactured in 1920. This nice size American Made Compass is complete with its gimbal ring and box. The compass is working properly. The compass has been in storage for many years and will need a good cleaning. It is approximately 9 1/4" outside to outside of the yoke/ gimbal supports. I am offering this Antique E.S. Ritchie Nautical Compass Made in Boston. Mass. USA. This is a unique antique piece of history made by E.S. Ritchie, American inventor and physicist. The large nautical compass comes in a beautiful wooden box. The compass is held in a mechanical metal frame; the top reads"E.S. RITCHIE& SONS 57751 BOSTON. The compass features ... morea fleur-de-lis with a patent and reads"Ritchie, Boston, USA. The metal shows oxidation from age. The wooden box has latches on each side. Box in excellent condition– no cracks. Wood appears to be teak. All screws are brass standard flat head domed screws. Compass Condition: Glass is all good- no cracks. Dial face has sun damage showing wear with one area curling up a bit. Compass appears to operate correctly for this area. But may need compensation elsewhere. The copper has NOT been cleaned- all original patina! Wood Box Condition: Box is heavy in weight. No damage, shows age, but gorgeous medium-finish wood and very sturdy. Gimbal latches lock and work perfectly. Wood appears to be teak. All screws are brass standard flat head domed screws I recently was told that the serial number in Ritchie data base details following: Sold new on Oct 1. 1920 to C.M. Offering this very early Antique E. S. Ritchie Co. Brass Ship Compass with liquid and no detectable serial number. The compass has structure bars and an underplate. Suspect it had an exterior container. But not sure as I cannot find any exact comperables. The brass looks crude and the glass dome globe cover looks ancient. The base measures 6 3/4 inches, the top bar around the globe measures 5 inches, the underplate is 4 3/4 inches and the unit stands 4 1/2 inches to top of globe. Did some cleaning, but as you can see from the pictures, a lot more is needed for full restoration. Certainly one of the earliest examples of Ritchie compasses I have seen but without a serial number, I can't say how old. Selling as found in condition desribed and pictured.

Rare 1907 Ritchie 9" flat top brass ships compass
Antique Ritchie brass ship compass. Compass is a 9” flat top manufactured in 1907 and sold on 10/1/1907 to the Upson Walton Company. It was repaired on 8/14/1928 for the Pittsburgh SS Company. That's all Ritchie had on it. I found only 3 ships manufactured in or around 1928 for PSS co. William G Clyde. Horace Johnson. And Myron C Taylor. All great lakes ore carriers. All sold for scrap. Compass is in good shape for its age and use. Glass is not cracked. Interior white paint is flaking due to it being almost empty of fluid when I found it. I filled it with water to stop that which I will remove when shipped. Great piece of Great lakes maritime history.

This is a gimbaled liquid compass by E. S. Ritchie of Boston. No. 11485. According to the Ritchie archives this compass was sent to Dunham& Hoit, Ship Chandlers and Sail Makers of South Water Street, Chicago on July 27th 1881. I can provide the buyer the scan of the order book that Ritchie sent me. I can also provide a scan of an advertisement for Dunham& Hoit(shown in the last photograph) They were located on the Chicago river just at the bend where the North and South branches meet just north of Lake Street. Today that is Wacker Drive. However, I found this piece in Cleveland even though I'm in Chicago. The dial is approx. 7 inches diameter(8 3/4 inches including the frame) And the bowl is 5 inches high. The brass frame has patent dates of 1863- 1876. The mahogany case measures 12 x 12 x 8 inches and is black painted inside. ... moreThere is some separation and an age split to the lid, but nothing that can't be easily repaired. I ship most domestic medium and larger items out thru fedex ground, smaller items i usually send out priority mail thru the post office. International packages i will only ship out by USPS priority express mail international which usually takes around 7 days delivery time. Larger international boxes that are too big for our post office i will send out fedex economy international, but please email us for a shipping cost before bidding. I do allow for pick up on certain items that are too fragile or too big to ship. For larger pieces such as furniture that are too big for normal shippers it would have to go by blanket-wrap freight shippers at the buyers expense. There are a couple of companies i can recommened who both have websites with price-quote pages that are easy to fill out. We have been selling on EBAY for over 12 years.
