VINTAGE GIMBAL C. PLATH COMPASS In Wood& Brass Case ORIGINAL VINTAGE ANTIQUE MADE IN GERMANY Nice condition MADE IN GERMANY Box measures 4 1/2 X 4 1/2" BODY METAL BRASS Looks to be older as brass has worn off and left copper exposed as well as a nice patina on box. This is either before 1945 or after 1990 and the unification.otherwise it would be marked West Germany. Looking at the overall I think it could be older older than 1990 but I can not be certain. It was an estate find and at first I thought it was just a display piece but now not sure. NICE CONDITION Please don't let this one slip away. Antique Brass Ships Binnacle by C. Plath, Hamburg, Germany
Aprox 9 inches tall and 11 inches wide. Bottom diameter is 7 1/4" The outer observation window is 3 5/8" Glass is clear. Inside is painted white. There is a cabinet on each side to house two oil lamps for night time navigating. Wicks are present. Brass ring for hanging. From what I can see it is working fine and is set to true north. 360 degree markings. Maker C. Plath and Hamburg Germany on the dial face. Unfortunately. Some tried to clean the brass and abandoned the project. It will look beautiful when it is finished. There is a white ball in the center of the dial which has a brown streak or stain. Vintage C PLATH Hamburg Germany Metal-Brass or Copper ? Ship Compass in Wood Box
This looks to be an older/vintage. Metal.I'm not sure of the type of metal. brass or copper? maybe. The lighting and flash really picked up a lot of dusty particles and places that aren't visible with the naked eye. It is mounted in a wood box. The wood box has a gold color inlay on the corners and the top has a gold color ship's steering wheel and corner type frames around it. I noticed some spotting on the front of the box but might polish out. There's a little metal latch on the front. After purchasing from an estate, on the way home, I got to test the compass and it seems to be in good working order. The wood/en box it's in measures approximately 4 1/2 inches side to side and approximately the same front to back and stands approximately 3 1/4 inches tall with the lid/top closed. Antique C. Plath Hamburg Germany Brass Binnacle Nautical Compass Marine Oil Lamp
Authentic. Not a reproduction. Made by Carl Plath Company Hamburg Germany. The company started making compasses in 1876. Until then they were mainly made in Great Britain. Item shows age. Wear, tear, scratches, discoloration, dirt, glass dent/chip/damage(upper left side- like getting hit on a car windshield from a rock, but does not appear to impact the item) and so forth as you can imagine. Either someone replaced the wick in the oil lamp or it was never used. Too nice. History/age of the piece is unknown- found at an estate sale. The gentlemen, who was put in a nursing home, had a huge collection of nautical items. The lantern is visible through the glass so they could see what the compass read. All items appear to be present and in working order- please keep in mind I could be wrong here.
