Overall the brass case diameter would take a cover that is 12 inches in diameter. The binnacle is currently 11 inches in height, the glass dome is 7 inches in diameter. It probably once sat on a large wood round pedestal and had a brass cover to protect it. It does have a date of 1899 on it so it is probably made then or a little after. It is fantastic quality and in excellent working condition. There is no damage or repairs. It is a heavy duty well made piece. I'm selling a vintage 1960's Kelvin White dry ship compass. It is marked Wilfred O. White& Sons Inc. New York, Boston, Baltimore on the directional disc. It originates from a Constellation and is a binnacle mounted compass. It has a black pivoting hemispherical dome protector and is in near perfect condition. The compass still functions correctly. It measures 7" in diameter and 7 1/4" at its tallest point. It would make a great addition to any boat or would be a really cool nautical display piece! This Beautiful Masketeer World Map is in very good condition for its age with minor scuffs. And has some minor surface rust on the brass. I started to clean it up and the rust does come off with ease. I do not have the appropriate brass cleaner so i will leave it up to the new owner. Antique Vintage FLOATING BRASS Binnacle COMPASS IN WOOD BOX; Boat Ship Nautical
Up for grabs is an older floating brass compass in a lidded walnut box. I am not sure the exact age of this compass as I got it from a friend who got it from someone else. The compass itself looks to be in good working order. And the box is in excellent shape. The compass does show a little wear which you can see in the pictures. Also the screws that hold the compass may need a tiny bit of adjusting, if you think it needs it(just takes a flat head screwdriver) I'm not sure how it is supposed to be but it can be tightened and loosened from the sides. Nice nautical inlay on the box making this a nice display piece if it was not in use. The walnut box measures 6" X 6" X 4" and the compass itself is 4" in diameter. It is liquid filled. The compass still points north. This compass will a great addition to any collection. The compass measures approx. 8 3/4 inches(just the glass alone) and approx. 10 1/2 inches with the brass ring included. The wooden box measures approx. 13 1/2 X 13 1/2. It is not the original box. A great estate sale find. The story behind the compass is that it came from the ship of billionaire heiress, Doris Duke. The person who sold it claims that her grandfather was commissioned to raise the ship from one of the great lakes. This compass was partial payment for his services. This item is very unique and rare and I have not been able to find another like it on the Internet. It appears to be an instrument for finding bearing. Possibly to aid in steering or navigation. It plugs in and the compass dial lights as shown in the photo. It is in a solid metal box and has a brass/bronze dial set into the top. The dial rotates and accepts a triangular insert as shown in the photos. This insert is stored on hooks inside the main box. Inside, is a compass rose with a rotating sight. This is a Large& Very Heavy ANTIQUE SHIP REPEATER COMPASS. It measures approximately 15 inches in diameter with metal frame work and is about 7 inches deep with hardware. Overall weight is nearly 48 pounds. Inner Compass part measures approximately 9.5 inches in diameter and about 5.5 without protruding hardware. Compass weight itself is marked on piece as 26 pounds. Also Serial Numbers are clearly marked as shown in photos. Piece is in Good Condition as shown. With only typical age signs as some paint peel and minor rust.
