Vintage and rare heavy metal ships compass in original case. Heavy bronze screws and swivel base. Compass says John E. Hand& Sons, Cherry Hill, NJ. Liquid filled, swings freely. Case is beat up, but has its charm. The top instructs about how to use light sticks for compass illumination, instructing the user to remove the light sticks from the clip in the cover, bend them, and then use them to read the compass at night. Note that there are no light sticks included with this compass. On the side, there is detailed instructions about how to find and adjust normal compass errors by steering your boat into the rising sun, then heading boat west, calculating the degrees and dividing by half. Then it tells you how to adjust the compass with the small screws on the side marked EW and NS. This looks to be an older/vintage. Metal.I'm not sure of the type of metal. brass or copper? maybe. The lighting and flash really picked up a lot of dusty particles and places that aren't visible with the naked eye. It is mounted in a wood box. The wood box has a gold color inlay on the corners and the top has a gold color ship's steering wheel and corner type frames around it. I noticed some spotting on the front of the box but might polish out. There's a little metal latch on the front. After purchasing from an estate, on the way home, I got to test the compass and it seems to be in good working order. The wood/en box it's in measures approximately 4 1/2 inches side to side and approximately the same front to back and stands approximately 3 1/4 inches tall with the lid/top closed. This is a vintage PIC pocket compass that is from around the 1950's. Has a silver tone metal body. Not sure if it's aluminum or what. Has a beautiful crystal with beveled edge that's glows kind of green. The inside face is painted in a gold color, and has what looks to be glow in the dark type, light reflective, dots, and the North hand is painted with the same"glow" color on the tip. Compass measures 2 1/4" across, with stem it's 3" In good shape, just minor metal wear- looks like it's just starting to patina, and a very tiny scratch on the crystal(no longer than 3/16" My dad used to use this when fishing. Works on a flat surface.
