The name of the maker is inscribed on the compass face along with the two cities where they were located. The numbers 13986 are incised into the bronze ring that encircles the compass. It is fully gimballed and has an oil burner complete with reflector to illuminate the compass at night. The door to the oil burner lamp compartment closes and latches perfectly. The glass in front is slanted and beveled and is perfect. On the back is a heavy duty mounting bracket. Measures appx. 7 1/2 by 7 by 10 inches tall. Lamp compartment adds another 2 inches to the width. Solid and well made. It is heavy, weighing in at 11 pounds. You could search high and low, but I guarantee you won't find a nicer one. Ship Lifeboat Compass WWII~ Marine Compass Co. Free Shipping
This is a ship/lifeboat compass made by the Marine Compass Co. The history as told by my 95 years young father who was a supply officer in WWII. That this was on one of the lifeboats of the Liberty Ships that were sunk or damaged in the air raid on the port of Bari in southern Italy on Dec 2. 1943 by German bombers. The gimbaled brass compass is 3" and the ring is 3 3/4. Couple of small scratches on the edge of the glass I cannot get them to appear in the photos. This compass functions extremely well& the wheel spins freely. But needs to be filled with liquid and the fleur-de-leis is point north. The dovetail box is 4 5/8 x 4 5/8 x 3 1/2 with swing hooks on either side to lock and little brass tacks on the top& bottom. Not sure what type of wood its made of. Antique Lifeboat Compass with Brass Gimbal and Binnacle with Light, Jin Hang
This gimbaled compass and brass binnacle was salvaged from a lifeboat on a steamship that was scrapped in 1968. The binnacle is 9" in diameter and 9" high; the compass card has a 4" face. The binnacle viewing opening is 5" in diameter and the cover glass is missing. The compass needs fluid and the card is somewhat yellowed. The compass works perfectly. The binnacle has a lighting compartment on the side of the compass for a candle or paraffin lamp. The binnacle has numerous small dents and dark spots. The compass was manufactured by Jin Hang SK Ind.Co. LTD. in China and probably predates WWII.

Weems Hand Held Compass lifeboat Compass w/Box Works!
This is a Weems(Annapolis. Maryland) hand held lifeboat compass with the box. My guess is that this was made in the 50's or 60's. It is a fluid filled bowl which can be used while in the storage box or held in the held. It points north. There is an attached glass crystal that I don't know what the purpose is, but maybe someone out there knows. The compass is in good shape considering the age and the fact that it has been used. The wooden box is worn but completely intact and sturdy. Happy to answer questions.

Bergen-Nautik Brass Lifeboat Compass, with Oil Lamp
This appears to be a fairly old lifeboat compass. Bergen-Nautik Norway is printed on the compass dial. The following numerals are on the top of the brass compass ring. BN 25 A. NSK 71, and 76372. There is an oil lamp attached to the side of the compass, everything appears to be in original condition, unless noted. This compass is 9" high X 7.5" diameter. And the length including the lamp box is 11.5" One of the brass gimbal screws has been replaced with a stainless steel shackle pin. There is no manufacturers plate or name on the brass exterior case. I have found several similar compasses on the internet, while researching this item. Look at the photos and ask any questions.

We believe(based on the stencil on the box and the correct vintage) That this is from the battleship USS Illinois which was part of T Roosevelt's Great White Fleet, participated in the relief effects after the 1908 Messina earthquake, and was in service during WWI. This is a copper and brass slant front lifeboat binnacle. Probably made in the early 1900's, with its compass marked"Negus, New York. The binnacle which measures approximately 10" high, 7" deep excluding the handle at the back, and 8 1/2" wide including the light box, appears to be complete but is in"as found" condition with minor dents, wear, verdigris and a dark brown patina. The compass is also in"as found" condition with some loss of liquid inside and verdigris on the bezel, but it still works. The light box on the right side contains its original lighting device, match holder and reflector; however, it appears to me that the copper wire catch used to secure the door is an old replacement. This is a WW2 era 1938 manufactured gimbaled compass. Made by Wilcox& Crittenden of Middletown. Connecticut. I researched this compass on google images. I found this same type and manufacturer on Smithsonian website. Similar one was used by Waldemar Semenov and his U.S. Merchant Marine shipmates to guide their lifeboat toward Florida after a German submarine sank their ship in the Atlantic, April 1942. This gimbaled compass is missing mahogany box. Compass is in very good working condition.
