Antique Marine Compass - Kelvin White Constellation Compass Wilfrid O. White
Here is a solid brass 8 pound marine compass made by Wilfrid O. White& Sons and has Kelvin White Constellation stamped onto the rim as well as a patent number and CB 4652 which might be a model number. It is roughly 7" tall and the base is 4.5" and the ring is about 7" in diameter. It has liquid inside and looks like it is full and compass rotates as it is turned. It looks like it had one arm that held it in place. Thanks for looking!

Compass glass is excellent with no scratches or cracks. Compass face has NO discoloration as shown. Compass swivels freely on its gimbaled base but will eventually need fresh oil installed. But swivels freely! I don't see any dents or damage to the outer case. There is No aging to the compass body. Weighs about 12 lbs alltogether. Easy restoration. If compelled too, but the piece is magnificent as is and with its flat base, will sit securely on your desk or other flat surface. The vintage compass offered here and shown below is a Pelorus. A nautical instrument manufactured by Kelvin& Wilfrid O. White Co. of Boston and N.Y. This comes in a wooden box which measures approximately 9-1/2" square x 3" tall.Also included is a wood and brass tripod which is marked Folmer Graflex Corp. Rochester N.Y. Crown Tripod No. 1. As for condition, some of the black paint is worn to the brass base metal, nothing drastic- just some scraping. Both the box and one of the tripod legs have the original owners name written on them. Kelvin& Wilfrid O. White Co. Cased Ship's Compass in pretty good and appears to be original condition. I am not an expert with compasses but it seems to work well. The case is dove-tailed at all its joints and it is in good condition. There are some minor scratches and wear on the wood case due to age. There is a piece at the bottom that has cracked or came unglued. You can see in the last picture. Both screws that hold the compass are original and identical. The hinges on both sides are also original and good. The black paint in the compass is a little chipped/worn off in some areas but. The metal, glass and compass inside are good. This one seems an early one, I wasn't able to find information on dating by serial number but. This one shows serial number 3567 in two places and it seems a low number so it might be from early on ... more1920 or so. Measurements: Compass: 5-7/8" in diameter without the ring holding it. Box: 8" long by 8" wide by 5-1/4" tall. Weight: approximately 6 lbs A little history about the maker: Wilfrid O. White of Williamstown Australia married the daughter of American George W. Eldridge who published the first Eldridge Tide and Pilot book. Wilfrid came from a family of shipbuilders and he was fascinated with navigation. He took an opportunity to study with Lord Kelvin in the UK and when he returned to Boston in 1918 where he opened up a small nautical instrument dealership. Kelvin and Wilfrid O. White Co. Was located on historic State Street in Boston, a couple of blocks from the busy waterfront. He offered sextants, compasses in large binnacles, chronometers, binoculars, taffrail logs, barometers, and charts for all oceans. Large Antique Kelvin & Wilfrid White Spherical Compass Skylight Binnacle
Estate find. Offered here at no reserve is an antique brass Kelvin& Wilfrid O White Spherical Compass Skylight Binnacle. Six glass panels. One panel having a vertical etched line for taking bearings. And one panel having a black filter. There is a tiny chip in one glass panel in the lower corner(see photo) The base of the compass bowl is fitted with a frosted glass which allowed lighting the card from beneath. The body of the binnacle is in good shape but does have a few soft dents. The skylight fits perfectly to the base, and the cap fits perfectly to the skylight. There is a hard to read number under the flange. Please ask any questions you may have and I will do my best to answer them accurately and promptly. The height is 13" The width. Including the flange, is 9 5/8" The compass card measures 4 1/2" in diameter.

A Nautical Course Protractor for use in conjunction with a Marine Compass. It is clearly an old instrument. Pre 1960 but I do not know its real age. It's made of transparent plastic. The Kelvin& Wilfrid White Company offices were located on State St. Boston MA and on Water St. New York. The paper case is badly worn but the instructions for use are still very legible. And the outside metal ring is 7 1/2" wide. when it is in the box it is 8 1/2" tall.
