Antique John Bliss & Co. Chronometer or Compass Box with Bartons Lantern
John Bliss& Co. operated at the Front Street location from the late 1880's until the 1920's. I believe this box is circa 1900-1910. It would have held a chronometer or compass. Night time navigation was made possible with the attached Bartons Burner oil lantern. A close inspection of the plaque(which reads"JOHN BLISS& CO. 128 FRONT STREET, NEW YORK. reveals a tight grain appearance, possibly bone? Believed to be constructed of walnut, the box measures 8 3/4" high and 8 1/4" wide. The lantern stands about 7 1/2" tall. Antique John Bliss, New York, Ship Nautical Maritime BRASS Compass & Wooden Box
This is an Antique John Bliss and Company of New York. Ship Nautical Maritime BRASS Compass& Wooden Box. The serial number is 5124. It dates pre 1948. The compass still holds water. It is liquid filled. The compass still points north. This compass will a great addition to any collection. The compass measures approx. 8 3/4 inches(just the glass alone) and approx. 10 1/2 inches with the brass ring included. The wooden box measures approx. 13 1/2 X 13 1/2. It is not the original box. A great estate sale find. The story behind the compass is that it came from the ship of billionaire heiress, Doris Duke. The person who sold it claims that her grandfather was commissioned to raise the ship from one of the great lakes. This compass was partial payment for his services. Interesting story, not sure how much is true. The wooden box was made by ... morethat man. This a VERY large and VERY heavy item. It is made of solid brass. I would suggest getting insurance. Rare Civil War Era John Bliss& Co. Tell Tale Compass N.Y. This is a wonderful brass compass in original condition built by the famous chronometer maker from N.Y. City. This compass was hung above the Captains bunk so that he could know. At a glance, that the ship was headed in the right direction. It is complete with original Gimbels mounting plate and three screws. This compass is in excellent original condition! The compass measures 7" across by 4" deep.

Binnacle Head by John Bliss, New York, circa 1900
Here is an early style mushroom-shaped binnacle head or top. Circa 1900, by the ship chandler and nautical insrtrument maker, John Bliss& Co. New York. Included with it are two brass caps for the lighting cylinders on either side of the head. Dimensions The total width of the head including the cylinders for the lighting devices is about 19 1/4" The total height and depth(front to back) are approximately 11 1/4" and 15 3/4" respectively. The inside diameter of the large opening at the bottom is 12" The lighting cylinders have a 3 3/8" inside diameter and their depth from top to bottom is 6 1/2" Condition This binnacle top has a number of small dings and dents commensurate with its age but it is generally in very good condition. The small brass disk at the top was originally engraved in fancy script. John ... moreBliss& Co. New York" however, most of the engraving has been polished away over the years to the point where today it is nearly illegible. The photos provide an accurate representation of the overall condition of the top, so please examine them carefully. In my view. The style of these early mushroom-shaped binnacle heads is more interesting than the conical or simple dome-shaped tops that came later. They were also more expensive to manufacture and more easily damaged which were two reasons why they were discontinued. If you have a binnacle base or brass cylinder that might fit it or. If you think you can find one, this may be of interest to you. Otherwise, it's an interesting old maritime relic that just might be fun to own. Shipping This is a large item. Welcome. You are bidding on a Wonderful Old Nautical Compass. The dial reads"JOHN BLISS& CO. NEW YORK. and from what I've read online, this is a very highly respected& strongly collected Early American maker. I think this is one of the companies dry model Compasses, judging by the John Bliss Compass Collector's Info Site, which shows a similar Compass. Here is a short quote from the page"From at least the 1870s, John Bliss& Co. manufactured dry card compasses, available in wood or brass bowls. if you Google the"JOHN BLISS NAUTICAL INSTRUMENT VIRTUAL MUSEUM, you'll find it, but Ebay will not allow me to post a link here, this is an excellent resource site in general for John Bliss Compasses in my opinion. The Compass dial turns, and points to the North, the glass is good and clear, and I think the paper ... moredial looks wonderful for it's age. I do Watchmaking& Jewelry making, and I have handled this fine instrument with the greatest of care& respect) The Dovetailed Wooden Case has what look like the words"BRASS BOAT, carefully painted on it, but the letters are rather faint, and the old paint and the overall finish looks to have darkened, and shows some surface wear& fading from age. There is some staining to the case finish, one side has what looks a stain on it, of some glossy dried liquid, but it blends in pretty well overall. The only significant crack I see in the case is along the top of the back, where the case lid would bump into the wood when slid closed. The bottom of the case also has some fading, wear, and staining and at least one tiny crack near a nail head, but everything is holding together well. That's what I know about it, and it's condition. I would think this is a very hard to find and highly collectible item, but please ask any& all question before bidding, decide for yourself, and bid as you see fit. ANTIQUE JOHN BLISS& CO NY. AZIMUTH IN ORIGINAL WOOD BOX- MARITIME-COMPASS Description: ANTIQUE JOHN BLISS& CO NY. AZIMUTH IN ORIGINAL WOOD BOX- MARITIME-COMPASS Comes from a smoke free home. This instrument is from the early part of the 20th century by John Bliss& Co and kept in its orignial brown wood box. The box is 6 3/4" x 2 1/2" x 2" and the instrument is 6" long. John Bliss& Co operated at 128 Front St in NYC from 1881 to 1929. Designed to be used with"liquid compasses of standard sizes" to determine the bearing(azimuth) of objects at sea. Whatever compass was used had to be"prepared" by drilling an indentation in the very center of the glass to take the center pin. A swinging mirror(attached to the left side sight vane) allowed bearings of celestial objects. And a sliding eye ... moreshade on the right vane allowed bearings of the sun. Alternatively, sun bearings can be taken by lining up the shadow of the vertical thread with the line on the white section. Accurate sun bearings can be used to check compass variation at sea.
