Beautiful condition and fully functional, it has a floating head compass that is protected by a mag nifying lens. It is cased in copper that has developed a rich patina over the years. It has a very early serial number- 282! This was one of the very early ones. Don't know the exact age. Stands 7 1/8" tall by 6" square. Weighs 7 1/2 pounds. Case closes tightly when not in use. It has a safety chain that pulls out of the top. Compass diameter is about 4" Markings incised into copper read: US MARITIME COMMISSION SERIAL NUMBER 282 MODEL NO. LMC-101-D APPROVED BY US COAST GUARD It is in fine condition and is original and intact. Has detailed instructions on front of case for truing the compass and has adjustment compensation screws for that purpose. This is a beauty. And s till r eady for sea duty after all these years. This auction is for an original vintage Saura Hand Bearing Compass type HB-65. This compass comes in its original wooden box and has a leather carrying strap. The strap has ripped and can easily be repaired. Box is in great original condition. Compass is in great working order. Has no condition issues. No cracks. No chips and no scratches. Battery compartment is clean and does not include batteries. Great vintage nautical maritime item and is a must for any collector. Found at a recent 85 year estate of a long time Navy Officer and was stored away for years. Will ship overseas and combine shipping on multiple wins. Vintage and rare heavy metal ships compass in original case. Heavy bronze screws and swivel base. Compass says John E. Hand& Sons, Cherry Hill, NJ. Liquid filled, swings freely. Case is beat up, but has its charm. The top instructs about how to use light sticks for compass illumination, instructing the user to remove the light sticks from the clip in the cover, bend them, and then use them to read the compass at night. Note that there are no light sticks included with this compass. On the side, there is detailed instructions about how to find and adjust normal compass errors by steering your boat into the rising sun, then heading boat west, calculating the degrees and dividing by half. Then it tells you how to adjust the compass with the small screws on the side marked EW and NS. The base and case need to be straightened.I don't know ... morethe history of this piece, but it is incredibly neat, and the case can be repaired by anyone remotely handy. This compass is arguably the finest of its type ever designed as a hand bearing device. The bowl is made from cast bronze, and can be polished to a high luster. The optical glass prism magnifies the image, and allows the user to see both the object being sighted and the compass card bearing at the same time. An iridium chip beneath the card was used to light it for night use and needs replacement. Presented is a Sestrel hand bearing compass originally designed and made by Henry Browne& Co. Barking, London England. This compass is arguably the finest of its type ever designed as a hand bearing device. The optical glass prism magnifies the image, and allows the user to see both the object being sighted and the compass card bearing at the same time. An iridium chip beneath the card was used to light it for night use and needs replacement. A penlight flashlight is a good alternative. The compass is mounted on a solid teak handle with attached card to make notations. I would suspect it to be from the 60's. But it could well be from WWII as well. You can tell examining it that it has seen some use. Weems Hand Held Compass lifeboat Compass w/Box Works!
This is a Weems(Annapolis. Maryland) hand held lifeboat compass with the box. My guess is that this was made in the 50's or 60's. It is a fluid filled bowl which can be used while in the storage box or held in the held. It points north. There is an attached glass crystal that I don't know what the purpose is, but maybe someone out there knows. The compass is in good shape considering the age and the fact that it has been used. The wooden box is worn but completely intact and sturdy. Happy to answer questions.

VINTAGE JAPANISE COMPASS W HAND-PAINTED BOX ARTWORK
Normal 0 Up for auction is a unique item: An old Japanese lacquered wood box with oriental hand painted artwork containing a compass with ornate Japanese symbols on the dial and a unique latch of solid brass. I believe the artwork is done in Gold-Leaf and Silver-Leaf Paints which were commonly used on artwork and ceramics years ago. These type paints contain gold and silver. The compass dial is solid brass, the compass works, and a neat function of the latch is an oriental design brass shaft pull fastens the latch closed. The lacquer has crazing which attests to its age, this item may have been used for navigation however it was more than likely intended as a piece of artwork to be displayed. This listing contains a bunch of Maritime Items I purchased from a woman whose late husband collected maritime antiques. Included in this lot are a Dirigo Compass which has some of the water missing and the compass is warped inside of it. Also included is a small John E. Hand Compass which also has most of the water gone. There is a vintage aqua Meter which is working and a couple other compasses as well two steam gauges. A vintage brass barometer, a Japanese floating fish filet knife and a metal ships hanging ashtray. Please look at all the photo's. Its a pretty interesting lot of stuff. Vintage Brass Hand Held Pocket Compass Glass Crystal Made in W Germany Quality
Vintage. Small compass. Appears to be very high quality. The only identification on it is the face says"WEST GERMANY" This dates it to between 1949 and 1990. We found it at an estate sale and my best guess is that it dates to the 1950s. The body is made out of brass with a loop at the top for hanging on a key chain or watch fob. The front is covered with what looks like crystal glass. Measures 1" in diameter(2.54 cm) 1 3/4" to the top of the loop, 3/8" thick, weighs about 1/4 ounce(about 7 grams) Condition: Quite a bit of oxidation and some spots on the metal. Good working condition. Crystal is in good shape. Overall. Good condition. All questions are welcomed. Thank you for looking. 8% tax will be added to sales within California. Comes out and revels a space for carrying extra batteries and bulbs. The latches on the box have light corrosion please see the pictures. The face of the exterior and interior of the compass show some age as well. The compass is in working condition. The contacts for the flashlight need cleaned. The bulb does not appear to be burnt out and did not have the batteries to test the flashlight but all of the parts are there. I think the interior contacts will need cleaned before the light will work. The leather strap old and may or may not need replaced. VTG Illuminated Lighted Hand Bearing Nautical Ship Compass AIRPLANE PILOT # 750
I have had people tell me that this could have been used on an aircraft carrier. To decide where the wind was blowing, some say it could have been used in an aircraft etc. It has gray paint on box(Navy or Air force? I tried to put a C battery in to see if flashlight works, but a C would not work. Its to big for a AA. Some other battery must have been used. Dove tail box is still sturdy. Latch is brass. Last picture I have is what looks like a seam in Bakelite. I do not think it is a crack, but please check it out. Battery area is pretty clean looking, like batteries were not left in it. I see no cracks or chips. Magnifying prism swivels.

Antique John Hand Ship Compass and Case/Binnacle with Lid Philadelphia Serial# 5623 Yacht Piece? Note: All items in our store include NO sales tax to our US customers! Here is a great Hand brass compass for your collection or decor needs. Recently picked it up at an auction. Would make a great gift or keep it for yourself. Not sure what year the compass was made as cannot find a serial number listing online. But would guess it was made in the early 1900s to 1930s. The compass body certainly shows wear and tear, but still shows nicely. Did not clean the compass, just wiped it down. The glass is intact on the piece, no cracking or blistering. Serial number on the compass is 5623. The ring on the compass and the brass ring the compass hang in both have the 5623 number on them. The compass was made by John Hand in Philadelphia per the compass ... moredial. The body and bowl on this compass are made of brass. Just not the ring around the glass top. That in my experience in reselling compasses is uncommon. The fluid is inside the compass case. Probably could use being replaced, but not yet cloudy. The compass is 8" across at the hinges where it sits in a beautiful mahogany case/binnacle. The case/binnacle box is just beautiful. Still has the top too which is rare with boxed compasses. The top of the case/binnacle is made of mahogany with the exception of the oak"stripe" in it that goes thru the glass. The glass on the top is also intact. No cracking or blistering and securely attached to lid. The wood binnacle case appears to be made of all mahogany. One side that does not have the wood hinges on it for the compass was split horizontally along the case and reglued at some point in the past. The case is 8-5/8" tall. By 8-5/8" across each side. I really think this compass came off a very nice private sailing vessel or yacht at some point as the case is way too nice for having been used for commercial use.
