This c1947 Ship's Compass was made by E.S. Ritchie& Sons Inc. in Boston. Mass. and has a 7" diameter dial. It is serial number 106673. This nice size American Made Compass is complete with its gimbal ring and box. The compass is moving and points north properly. I believe it still contains its fluid. The compass has been in storage for many years and will need a good cleaning. The wood box will need some attention but should restore nicely. The compass has a 7" diameter glass lens and is approximately 8 5/16" in diameter. It is approximately 11 1/4" outside to outside of the yoke supports. Short& Mason Compass 1903 Up for auction is a very cool brass compass. It was made in London in 1903 by Short& Mason. I was told that is is a hunter's compass but I don't know. I wasn't able to find anything like it. The dial is Mother of Pearl and there is no needle( The arrow is painted on the dial. At first I thought it didn't work until I realized it has an ON OFF switch on the side. The dial floats around but I can't vouch for accuracy. The compass measures 2" around. The leather case is 3" wide and 3 1/2" long. The case is missing the shoulder strap and the leather piece that secures the cover to the case. It has some scuffing where the strap rubs. The compass is in excellent condition with no scratches on the glass or dents in the brass. The previous owner scratched his name on the back.
