Brass Compass(military or hunting) from period late 1870's to early 1940's This is a Singer type. Samuel Berry SINGER was a British Navy captain. He invented the compass rose design which was named after him(patent filed in 1861- see also HUNTER's patent) His idea was to make it easier to distinguish the compass' rose position in the dark by painting the northern half in black while leaving the southern half blank. The compass card's material(mother of pearl) would then reflect even faint light. Beautiful Vintage Sestrel English Compass Binnacle Type CY by Henry Browne & Son
Honey. I shrunk the binnacle! I can't say whether this 20" tall binnacle is for nautical or decorative purposes. It's made by Sestrel, a well known english maker, and It has a nice, perfectly functioning, full gimbal mount compass and iron compensating balls, just like their large binnacles. It's even styled like their larger models with the wooden(mahogany, teak? pedestal base and dual lamp houses. The port side lamp house has a night light socket in it. I would guess that someone added this later, but you can plug it in and have an interesting accent lamp as the warm glow illuminates the compass. I have re-sprayed the interior with flat white enamel. Looks good! The lower hemisphere of the housing has a few very minor dents. The upper hemisphere is pretty much perfect. Type p10 British bomber compass part no 6a 1671
This British p10 aircraft compass was made in the late 1930s early 1940s and was a development of the early p4 but differs in having four crosshairs. It was fitted to many British military including the famous one the Lancaster Bomber. The P10 is made of brass and bakelite with 2 glass windows. The compass was originally filled with filled with industrial methylated spirits but is no longer. the compass rose rotates and locks on a desired heading by means of a brass lever located at the aft end. It is sealed with linseed putty which dries out over the years and develops a leak. Either all the fluid drains away or just partial leaving an air bubble indeed this is what happened to this one sense there is no filling liquid. The compass bowl carries the code 6A/1671 which signifies a WW2 device. The P10- as built into a Lancaster had the following ... moredimensions: Diameter 7 1/4 in. Weight 5lb 14 oz. 4 magnets. Antique silk dry card compass. It measures about 11.5 inches in diameter. It stands about 4.5 inches tall. The inside has a Barcelona address on the paper(see photos) The glass on the top may have dropped down. Right now you can move it around. Though it is attached in the center by bolt.seems like it should be fixed inside the top of the case? I know, from the tag that my father paid $495 for the compass a long time ago.
