Vintage Kelvin White Constellation Compass with hood/Bakelite housing?/working
This is a nice. Solid vintage Kelvin White boat compass with a thick binnacle-like base and hood. Has fluid and seems to be in good working order. As seen in photos, electrical cord has been cut so I cannot make any claim on the lighting. Size is about 7" in diameter across the base, about 7" high and I would say compass itself is 5" in diameter. It weighs about 8 pounds. The housing looks to be a hard plastic- possibly Bakelite. Patent# is 2428346. It also is marked: CB 3051. Overall, this is a beefy compass by a very well respected maker, and ready for your boat or to be mounted for display. US ship only. This is a completely restored HEAVY brass gimbaled ships compass housing. There is no compass in it. But it is a real show piece! Heavy glass top and bottom. Perfect condition. The family had a history of military and nautical careers through both world wars, and collected authentic nautical items of those periods(but I am not an expert, and do not know this items certain age) This is a binnacle housing PART from a ship's navigational system. NO COMPASS. Being sold"as-is" I do not know if the 3 separate round pieces shown in first and last photo actually go with this binnacle or not. But they came with it and are being sold with it. Maritime. Salvaged, Skylight Binnacle Compass Housing. Made of solid Brass and glass. Consists of six panes of triangular glass. Mounted on Brass compass housing. Skylight portion of the housing measures 8 3/4"tall x 9 1/2"across at the bottom and 4 1/2"across at the top. Top of Brass housing has small dent. Glass panes have been reinforced with clear glue. And some may not be original to the housing. Brass base of the housing measures 5"tall x 7 1/4"across the top and 9 1/2"across the bottom. Housing base has two side brackets each with one hole for mounting outer ring of a compass. Opening measures 7"across. Total weight of both sections is 5 pounds.
