This is a gimbaled liquid compass by E. S. Ritchie of Boston. No. 11485. According to the Ritchie archives this compass was sent to Dunham& Hoit, Ship Chandlers and Sail Makers of South Water Street, Chicago on July 27th 1881. I can provide the buyer the scan of the order book that Ritchie sent me. I can also provide a scan of an advertisement for Dunham& Hoit(shown in the last photograph) They were located on the Chicago river just at the bend where the North and South branches meet just north of Lake Street. Today that is Wacker Drive. However, I found this piece in Cleveland even though I'm in Chicago. The dial is approx. 7 inches diameter(8 3/4 inches including the frame) And the bowl is 5 inches high. The brass frame has patent dates of 1863- 1876. The mahogany case measures 12 x 12 x 8 inches and is black painted inside. ... moreThere is some separation and an age split to the lid, but nothing that can't be easily repaired. Vintage Keuffel & Esser Co. Pocket Compass dated 1931 "NICE"
Vintage Keuffel& Esser Co. New York. Pocket Compass. Keuffel& Esser was one of the First American Companies to specialize in these types of products. This one STILL has the ORIGINAL STICKER INSERT inside the Lid with directions/instructions DATING 1931 B.W. James. I believe it made of nickel and silver and it is in GOOD working order. It does have a few age spots(green/brown) Also the hinge has some usage wear and or tarnish. These also is a speck near the hinge when plating has come off it is slightly blackened. That being said this is a GREAT OLD compass. It was definitely made by craftsmenfrom a forgotten age. No plastic here! Please check out my other compass buy them BOTH and carry two! WW1/WW2 US Navy Boat No. L3466 Brass Compass Dated July 1919. Lionel Corp.
Vintage US Navy brass compass. I do not know much about this compass. But it is accurate to direction(works) I acquired this item from a WW2 Navy veteran who had it stored in a closet for decades and has not seen daylight since I purchased it. Hopefully the photo's will speak for itself. As you can see it has matching(L3466) number on the compass face, brass ring and pivot ring. The glass appears to be double pane. As see from the photo's, it shows cloudiness in the inside of the glass, which appears can be clean, but will leave that for the new owner to decide. The cloudiness I'm certain originated from the many, many years being isolated in one location causing the water marks. I do not see any damage on the unit. It is ready for easy restoration to make it new or leave as is. A great gift to the war collector, office decor ... moreor boat use. I took many detail photo's to represent this item best I can and did my very best to describe it, but please ask if you have further questions. ANTIQUE OLD NAUTICAL SOLID BRASS COMPASS MARINE DATED 1895 BOAT / SHIP
This is a solid brass nautical compass dated 1899. The compass was made by Stanley London. The top of the compass has a Natural Sine Chart. You would open the compass up to reveal the inner compass and readings. The compass is complete and in very good condition. The compass is about 3" across when closed.
