Offered for sale is an antique Compass Corrector in its original wooden box with brass hinges and brass handle. This compass corrector was used on sunny days. To make sure that your compass was working correctly on the open seas. The dial reads Ritchie Boston E.S. Ritchie& Sons Brookline. MASS U.S.A. The box measures: 7 1/2" l x 7 1/2" w x 7 1/2" h. One side of the bottom of the box has some damage. It is separating, the joint just needs to be reglued. Great piece of maritime history. Comes with an advertisiment from September of 1962. This is a great condition compass corrector or pelorus on a unique gimbaled setup for a nice hardwood tripod. Likely is one of a kind. This instrument measures 7 inchs diameter and comes with a box that I have but will need to be modified to fit this inst. it is not original to the instrument. Also comes with the nice tripod you see in the photos. This instrument is either gimbaled for quick leveling over a point on land, or is gimbaled for use on a ship, I really don't know but since it has a plumb bob I assume it is for land based use? Have never seen another like this, did some internet searches and found reference to something similar in an 1888 issue of Nautical Engineer magazine. Only negatives are the cracks you can see in the small porcelain center piece, and the tripod legs have a slight bow to them. Here is a pre-1950 Darra Compass Corrector. Sun Compass and Polaris made by Aqua Meter Instrument Corp. Roseland, NJ. A Polaris is a navigational instrument to measure in degrees the relative compass bearing of landmarks. The Sun Compass is also a navigational instrument to measure the compass deviation. Both were vital instruments in determining your position at sea. Now of course they are obsolete because of the GPS system, but still a“must have” for the serious maritime collector. VTG Taylor Compass Corrector Pelorus Navigation Up for sale is a Vintage Taylor Compass Corrector Pelorus Navigation Instrument. There are two pins included. This Vintage Pelorus shows signs of wear due to scuffs and scrapes. Overall Good condition for being 50 plus years old. It appears to be in full working order. M easures 3 5/8" across the top bezel and is 3" tall without the pin. Please see photos for condition details. For more infromation. Please read below. We found the following information on a website that had information regarding the Collection of Military Compasses. It said: Copyrighted in 1961 by the Taylor Instrument Co. of Rochester. NY, this navigation tool was a must-have for sailors. Gimbal-mounted. It tilts in any direction and remains horizontal even when its support is tipped. In appearance and use. A pelorus ... moreresembles a compass, with sighting vanes or a sighting telescope attached, but it has no magnets or independent directive properties. That is, it remains at any relative direction to which it is set. It is generally used by setting 000° at the lubber's line. Relative bearings are then observed. They can be converted to bearings true, magnetic, grid, etc. by adding the appropriate heading. The direct use of relative bearings is sometimes of value. A pelorus is useful, for instance, in determining the moment at which an aid to navigation is broad on the beam. It is also useful in measuring pairs of relative bearings which can be used to determine distance off and distance abeam of a navigational aid, or to determine whether a nearby vessel’s course is closing. If the dial is turned so that its reading opposite the lubber’s line is the same as the reading of the ship’s compass. Bearings read from the dial will be identical to those read from the compass. Similarly, if the true heading is set at the lubber's line, true bearings are observed directly. Vintage Darra Gimbaled Compass Corrector. Aqua Meter Seems to be from the 40's that is just a guess have seen them listed from pre30 to pre50. There are 2 small needles on the base. It seems to move freely, item is clean free fom paint chips. Dial is about 3" in diameter, 3.5" tall and 4.25 at widest point.
