Appears to be in very good vintage working condition. Black paint looks great, with only a few small areas where it has chipped off. The manufacturer’s etched lettering around the edge that identifies the compass is visible and prominent, and the glass face has no scratches or damage. MID to LATE 1800s BINNACLE. with EARLY/MID 1900s WET COMPASS, 4-1/4 INCH CARD
THIS ITEM. AS WITH MOST OF MY ITEMS, CAN BE SEEN IN MY NEW ANTIQUE STORE, 20 MECHANIC STREET CAMDEN MAINE. I AM OPEN TO OFFERS ON THIS ITEM. THIS LOOKS TO BE A EARLY BINNACLE WITH A LATER COMPASS. You are bidding on ONE ORIGINAL(NOT A REPRODUCTION) wooden/bronze binnacle with a later compass. My research leads me to believe the binnacle is English and from the mid to late 1800s. It is a very rare design being pyramid shape. Mine is NOT marked with a makers mark. I have seen a very similar one which was described as"Royal Navy Binnacle Boat Compass. Dent& Co. England" MINE DOES NOT HAVE THOSE MARKINGS AND I AM NOT SELLING THIS ITEM AS SUCH. HOWEVER. Dimensions are the same. HOWEVER, the compass looks to be later probably early to mid 1900s and is a wet compass. THIS BINNACLE DOES NOT HAVE THE BURNER USED FOR LIGHTING. What you ... moresee is what you get. There is a knob on the front which locks the top(bronze) closed. It is opened in some of the pictures. The front glass panel opens as seen.There is a locking mechanism which locks the gimbals function(see pic 10) Locks it so compass will not gimbal such as in storage or at anchor. You can see the details in the pictures. Brass/bronze bezel on compass is 6-1/8" across. Card is 4-1/4" across. Card has Fleur de les for North and has numeric degrees. Card can be easily seen in the pictures. Glass is clear. There is some dust/paint chips which show in pictures. I should have dusted them off before I took the pictures. Inside of lid has been painted white as seen in pics. Compass bezel has one marking on it which is"No. 106" I do not know what that means. Looks to be teak base. Very heavy item being at least 20 pounds. Will be shipped UPS Ground. Compass seem to work just fine and is accurate but has not been adjusted. Overall it is in excellent used antique condition. What we have here is an antique 4" gimbaled compass. It is a"trade GIRIGO mark" unit made by E.M. Sherman of Seattle. Wash. This is a neat old compass ring that I am guessing comes from a large boat compass. I know nothing about these. The ring looks to be made of brass and has the degrees on it from 0 to 360. The ring measures 12 3/4" diameter with the ring being 1" wide. It has a set of holes around it that I assume were used to attach to the compass. This is an old 1936 Wilcox Crittenden bronze box compass in excellent original condition. The glass is clear and the card is clear. Unstained and very readable. This is the large size. The mahagony colored wood box measures 5 3/4 inches square. Keep your classic sailboat or power boat all bronze! These are very reliable and very attractive compasses. Compasses of this size and design were often used as a backup compass or in a lifeboat. This compass is made of brass and mounted in a 6” square x 4½” deep mahogany tongue and grove case with brass hardware. The case lid has 3 brass pins so it fits in only one position. The 3¼” compass card is signed“POLARIS” which was built by MARINE COMPASS CO. based in PEMBROKE MASS. There is a small metal bar mounted in the center of the compass card that reads: PAT. DOT. 1911” The compass liquid(mineral oil) is full and the readings appear to be accurate. This quality unit is very unique in two respects. First it has 6 volt lighting with the original screw in miniature bulb fixture and cloth covered ... morewire. Second.
