It's historic maker makes it an interesting conversation piece in any setting. Originally. It would have been mounted in a box, or housed in a binnacle which may have been used in whaleboat, dory, or fishing boat of the 1850's. COMPASS' MAKER: Baker was born in New Bedford. MA in 1792. Baker is listed in Webster's and also in the Whale-man's list which shows he was a dealer in nautical instruments. Later, he worked with a partner, Thomas Hooper at 54 Ann St. in Boston, MA. D. 60 year old Wilcox @ Crittenden, brass boat/ship compass w/ full box
This is a 60 year old Wilcox and Crittenden brass compass approx. 3" in diameter. Box is approx. 4 3/4" square. Compass and gimbal still have original black paint on them in good shape. It appears that both are brass and should be a very nice brass compass if you should remove paint. There is a label inside from Wilcox and Crittenden with a date of Mar 5. 1953. This compass does not hold oil. I opened and found the glass in very good condition and the seal in place. I assume that due to the age of the seal, it no longer seals properly. This is a neat old compass ring that I am guessing comes from a large boat compass. I know nothing about these. The ring looks to be made of brass and has the degrees on it from 0 to 360. The ring measures 12 3/4" diameter with the ring being 1" wide. It has a set of holes around it that I assume were used to attach to the compass. Up for grabs is an older floating brass compass in a lidded walnut box. I am not sure the exact age of this compass as I got it from a friend who got it from someone else. The compass itself looks to be in good working order. And the box is in excellent shape. The compass does show a little wear which you can see in the pictures. Also the screws that hold the compass may need a tiny bit of adjusting, if you think it needs it(just takes a flat head screwdriver) I'm not sure how it is supposed to be but it can be tightened and loosened from the sides. Nice nautical inlay on the box making this a nice display piece if it was not in use. The walnut box measures 6" X 6" X 4" and the compass itself is 4" in diameter.
