Offered is a fine working example of an old full size brass ship's binnacle compass possibly pre-dating WW1. Compass marked: C. Plath Hamburg This is a nice example of an old large Plath ship's compass in enviable condition with accurate readings. Further research is needed to determine if this instrument was manufactured in the 1800s by this internationally leading marine instrument maker. Compass would have been stationed in a full size standard ship's binnacle. This is the first time compass listed since acquired from the estate of a marine antiques collector. THIS ITEM. AS WITH MOST OF MY ITEMS, CAN BE SEEN IN MY NEW ANTIQUE STORE, 20 MECHANIC STREET CAMDEN MAINE. I AM OPEN TO OFFERS ON THIS ITEM. THIS LOOKS TO BE A EARLY BINNACLE WITH A LATER COMPASS. You are bidding on ONE ORIGINAL(NOT A REPRODUCTION) wooden/bronze binnacle with a later compass. My research leads me to believe the binnacle is English and from the mid to late 1800s. It is a very rare design being pyramid shape. Mine is NOT marked with a makers mark. I have seen a very similar one which was described as"Royal Navy Binnacle Boat Compass. Dent& Co. England" MINE DOES NOT HAVE THOSE MARKINGS AND I AM NOT SELLING THIS ITEM AS SUCH. HOWEVER. Dimensions are the same. HOWEVER, the compass looks to be later probably early to mid 1900s and is a wet compass. THIS BINNACLE DOES NOT HAVE THE BURNER USED FOR LIGHTING. What you ... moresee is what you get. There is a knob on the front which locks the top(bronze) closed. It is opened in some of the pictures. The front glass panel opens as seen.There is a locking mechanism which locks the gimbals function(see pic 10) Locks it so compass will not gimbal such as in storage or at anchor. You can see the details in the pictures. Brass/bronze bezel on compass is 6-1/8" across. Card is 4-1/4" across. Card has Fleur de les for North and has numeric degrees. Card can be easily seen in the pictures. Glass is clear. There is some dust/paint chips which show in pictures. I should have dusted them off before I took the pictures. Inside of lid has been painted white as seen in pics. Compass bezel has one marking on it which is"No. 106" I do not know what that means. Looks to be teak base. Vintage RITCHIE COMPASS & BRASS BINNACLE Taken Off "The Liberty Belle" Riverboat
NO RESERVE! Vintage Used E.S. Ritchie Compass and Brass Binnacle from"The Liberty Belle" Paddlewheel Riverboat. Which still operates dinner cruises on the Delaware River in Philadelphia. The Liberty Belle was built in Biloxi, Mississippi in 1958, and I was told this had been ship's equipment removed when the boat was refitted years ago. The hooded brass binnacle stands 9 inches tall, by 7-1/8 inches in diameter, and the glass compass dome measures about 5" in diameter across the bottom. Compass has some scratches on the glass dome. Dial light works when hooked up to a 12 volt battery. Comes with extra nameplate, bolts, and washers in plastic bag not shown in my pictures. Antique Standard Compass Ship's Brass and Oak Binnacle w/ Bergen Nautik Compass
Antique Standard Compass ship's brass and oak binnacle with a Bergen Nautik compass. The compass having been made in Bergen Norway. The binacle is 22" high x 10" x 10" and appears to be mostly complete with the exception of the mechanism in the oak base that has been removed and replaced with a light socket(ie electrified) I believe. From my research, that the binacle was made in the first half of the last century. Overall, the binacle is in good shape with no real damage to report. Some weathering to the finish on the oak base, as can be seen in the photos. The compass and glass are in good condition with no breaks or cracks. Reasonable reserve.

Six Brass Binnacle Compass Bowls While we all wish that more good marine stuff would come up for auction on Ebay. It’s a good place to find all sorts of hard-to-find miscellaneous parts. Here is something you don't see everyday: six brass binnacle/ compass bowls of various sizes. Since they have been doing nothing but gathering dust in my basement for the last twenty-five years. It’s now time for them to go. If you can use just one of these. They would be well worth the money. In the photos you will see that I have numbered the bowls from one through six. Here is a detailed description of each: Bowl#1- It has an outside diameter at the top lip of 7 5/8” and a height of approx. 5” It also has five holes in the bottom and one barely-noticeable minor vertical stress fracture in the side of the bowl well below the bead or the stop. Bowl#2- ... moreThis has an outside diameter at the top lip of 7 39/64” to 7 5/8” and a height of approximately 6 ½” There are no holes in the bottom of the bowl and one minor dimple in the side—see the pic. Bowl#3- This has an outside diameter at the top lip of 8” and a height of approx. 5 1/8” It has one center hole at the bottom and three dents. All of which could be easily pushed out given the thinness of the brass. I suspect this was designed to be a bowl for a dry-card compass typically housed in a wood box. But it was never used. Bowl#4- It has an outside diameter at the top lip of 9 39/64” and a height of approx. 5¼” There is one center hole at the bottom and one one-inch horizontal split at the top of the bead above the number four. Bowl#5- This bowl has an outside diameter at the top lip of 10 1/8” and a height ofapprox. 7 ½” It has one center hole at the bottom and the overall condition is about perfect. Bowl#6- This has an outside diameter at the top lip of 12 1/8” and a height of approx. 7” There is one center hole at the bottom and a serious stress facture that runs vertically through the bead just above the number six. Two Brass Binnacle / Compass Cylinders
Here are two brass binnacle/ compass cylinders that I purchased from a ship chandler in New York over 25 years ago. One is marked" Negus- New York" on a small brass plaque. I believe the other was also made by Negus because the design is the same; however. It is not marked as such. These were probably the bases for skylight or so called mushroom head binnacles. The largest of the two has an outside diameter of 9 9/32" at the top lip. The height is 7" and the maximum width of the base ring is 11 3/4" This is one of the standard sizes for Negus binnacles and Ritchie compasses made during the period. It's overall condition is very good but it's missing the trunnion holders that the tips of the gimbal ring would rest on. These could be replaced by purchasing 2 one inch square pieces of brass that are 1/4" ... morethick and cutting a"V" shaped groove in the top edge. The smaller one has an outside diameter of 7 21/32" at the the top lip. The height is 6 1/8" and the maximum width of the base ring is 9 3/8" This is also a standard Negus size. It is also missing its trunnion holders. In addition. You can see in one of the photos that the top lip is somewhat out of round. I think this could be straightened without much difficulty. If you have a binnacle top that would fit one of these or you think you may be able to find one in the future. These could be a bargain. These 2 cylinders are being sold without reserve. RARE ANTIQUE TWIN BURNER DISPLAY or PRESENTATION Modified to preserve the top section only. This display binnacle makes a dramatic statement of importance. It is a perfect gift or as a focal point in any decor. Presented is an upper portion of a binnacle that was removed from the binnacle trunk upon which it was mounted. And then placed on a turned wood base for display. It is in good condition as a display piece considering its age and use. The twin burner design dates back to the 1860's. The brass hood has a large hinged round viewing port in front that is flanked by a kerosene burner housing on each side. One of the burners was removed so that it could be electrified and an electrical receptacle was installed. It lights the inside well. The other burner is not original, but fully functional. The tops of both burner caps are dented. ... moreThe wood base was painted a blue/green and has weathered with age and now is heavily crackled which give a pleasing rustic appearance. THE COMPASS: The partially gimbaled compass has a 6 inch Ritchie card made from Mica and linen that dates from 1900. The compass measures 8 3/8" in diameter overall and the card is 6" in diameter. Stamped on the bezel along the edge is AZKANIA WERKE A.G. BAMBERERE WERKE BERLIN-FRIEDENAU and opposite DKS 16 D(a Crown) Nr 76103. The solution has been drained from the bowl for conservation. On the outer circle the compass rose is divided in degrees with the major mark at every ten degrees. This convention came into favor at the Turn of the 20th Century. The inner circle are in Cardinal Points. N.S,E,W, and quarter points, NE, SE, SW, NW. The outer circle was graduated in degrees from 0 to 359. The north pointer was an ornate Fleur des Lis. Vintage or Antique Wilcox Crittenden& Co Ship's Maritime Binnacle Compass in Wooden Box. This is a great looking antique Ship's or Lifeboats Binnacle Compass in the original wooden box. The compass was made by Wilcox Crittenden& Co. Wilcox-Crittenden produced marine equipment at their Middletown. Connecticut facility for many years. The Wilcox name is again in use, but the old firm closed years ago. This is the classic WC compass the old company produced into the 1960s. I am sorry I do not know the exact year it was made. On the bottom of the compass bowl are numbers that are probably a date code. This number is what appears to be P403. The compass is three inches across the top in a blackened bronze compass bowl. We were informed that the Compass bowls were usually made of bronze with a flat painted or darkened finish to ... moreminimize glare. And for ease of maintenance. The finish often wears off after a few years, but the blackening on this instrument is still in original condition. We were told the compass has been drained for storage but works well. Vintage Marine Gimbaled Binnacle Compass
This binnacle compass was used by one or more wooden fishing vessels in the Arabian Sea. Compasses similar to this one have been used world-wide for hundreds of years. No attempt has been made to make it look shiny and new. The gimbaled compass tends to remain steady despite the rocking of the vessel. At night the compass face is illuminated by a built-in wind-proof oil lamp. The compass is accurate. The gimbaled binnacle compass was purchased at a marine salvage shop in Mumbai(formerly Bombay) The compass is about 7" high. About10" long, and about 8" wide. It weighs about 5 lbs.

Antique Lifeboat Compass with Brass Gimbal and Binnacle with Light, Jin Hang
This gimbaled compass and brass binnacle was salvaged from a lifeboat on a steamship that was scrapped in 1968. The binnacle is 9" in diameter and 9" high; the compass card has a 4" face. The binnacle viewing opening is 5" in diameter and the cover glass is missing. The compass needs fluid and the card is somewhat yellowed. The compass works perfectly. The binnacle has a lighting compartment on the side of the compass for a candle or paraffin lamp. The binnacle has numerous small dents and dark spots. The compass was manufactured by Jin Hang SK Ind.Co. LTD. in China and probably predates WWII.

Antique Vintage FLOATING BRASS Binnacle COMPASS IN WOOD BOX; Boat Ship Nautical
Up for grabs is an older floating brass compass in a lidded walnut box. I am not sure the exact age of this compass as I got it from a friend who got it from someone else. The compass itself looks to be in good working order. And the box is in excellent shape. The compass does show a little wear which you can see in the pictures. Also the screws that hold the compass may need a tiny bit of adjusting, if you think it needs it(just takes a flat head screwdriver) I'm not sure how it is supposed to be but it can be tightened and loosened from the sides. Nice nautical inlay on the box making this a nice display piece if it was not in use. The walnut box measures 6" X 6" X 4" and the compass itself is 4" in diameter. Very nice marine compass in working condition. Compass is being sold as is because. The burner that lights up the compass has been replaced with an electric system that works. The door hinge needs to be soldered. The hinge is there.There are a few very shallow dings in the brass binnacle. The compass is signed Kelvin& Hughes, England. Beautiful Vintage Sestrel English Compass Binnacle Type CY by Henry Browne & Son
Honey. I shrunk the binnacle! I can't say whether this 20" tall binnacle is for nautical or decorative purposes. It's made by Sestrel, a well known english maker, and It has a nice, perfectly functioning, full gimbal mount compass and iron compensating balls, just like their large binnacles. It's even styled like their larger models with the wooden(mahogany, teak? pedestal base and dual lamp houses. The port side lamp house has a night light socket in it. I would guess that someone added this later, but you can plug it in and have an interesting accent lamp as the warm glow illuminates the compass. I have re-sprayed the interior with flat white enamel. Looks good! The lower hemisphere of the housing has a few very minor dents. The upper hemisphere is pretty much perfect. I think it's the nicest one of its type I've ... moreseen on ebay in quite awhile. This would make a great accessory for a beach house, or use as a functioning compass in your traditional yacht. There is the usual tarnishing of brass and copper. And minor paint scaling of the compass face under the glass with water. The unit contains the“Kelvin Balls” Red and Green indicators for Port and Starboard. The brass and copper Binnacle is approximately 10"W x 5"H x 5"D without wood base. All seals are in good condition and there are no leaks. We have not tried to clean or polish this item. The 8 1/2" wood base is solid wood.
