Antique Standard Compass Ship's Brass and Oak Binnacle w/ Bergen Nautik Compass
Antique Standard Compass ship's brass and oak binnacle with a Bergen Nautik compass. The compass having been made in Bergen Norway. The binacle is 22" high x 10" x 10" and appears to be mostly complete with the exception of the mechanism in the oak base that has been removed and replaced with a light socket(ie electrified) I believe. From my research, that the binacle was made in the first half of the last century. Overall, the binacle is in good shape with no real damage to report. Some weathering to the finish on the oak base, as can be seen in the photos. The compass and glass are in good condition with no breaks or cracks. Reasonable reserve.

This is an old/ antique BERGEN NAUTIK solid brass and copper liquid filled Bridge Deck GIMBALED COMPASS from BERGEN. NORWAY in Great Condition for its age. There is the usual tarnishing of brass and copper. And minor paint scaling of the compass face under the glass with water. The unit contains the“Kelvin Balls” Red and Green indicators for Port and Starboard. The brass and copper Binnacle is approximately 10"W x 5"H x 5"D without wood base. All seals are in good condition and there are no leaks. We have not tried to clean or polish this item. The 8 1/2" wood base is solid wood. What may appear as a crack in the photo is actually the joint between two pieces of solid wood which was probably re-glued at one time that can faintly been seen in the second image. Please Note. Up for auction is a neat ship binnacle compass. This appears to be made out of either copper or brass. This is being sold in as-found condition for parts repair or restoration. It's actual working condition is unknown as I have no idea how to test an item like this. It has a little oil kerosene lamp in the side compartment that says"Wedge" on it. The compass face has the words"Bergen Nautik" and"Bergen Norway" on it. There is a dent on the left hand top of the outer helmet part. see picture) The little glass panel off to the side by the oil lamp is loose. Bergen-Nautik Brass Lifeboat Compass, with Oil Lamp
This appears to be a fairly old lifeboat compass. Bergen-Nautik Norway is printed on the compass dial. The following numerals are on the top of the brass compass ring. BN 25 A. NSK 71, and 76372. There is an oil lamp attached to the side of the compass, everything appears to be in original condition, unless noted. This compass is 9" high X 7.5" diameter. And the length including the lamp box is 11.5" One of the brass gimbal screws has been replaced with a stainless steel shackle pin. There is no manufacturers plate or name on the brass exterior case. I have found several similar compasses on the internet, while researching this item. Look at the photos and ask any questions.

Antique Ships Binnacle with Compass and Oil Lamp. Bergen-Nautik This brass helmet style binnacle has a floating compass on a gimbaled mount made by Bergen-Nautik in Bergen. Norway. Our knowledge of the working of a compass is nil. But the liquid filled compass moves both ways in the mount and points to North. The oil lamp is marked: Wedge. And the handle works to rotate the wick out of the base. The lamp housing is missing the door, but does still have the interior glass to protect the compass from the flame. Dimensions: 9" H. Or 10-1/2" to the top of the ring. 10" W at the base, or 11-1/2" W including the lamp housing. It is in relatively good condition for its age. But there are various mars and minor imperfections.
