The front pieces are 38 3/4" long and 38 1/2" long. The side pieces are 4 1/2" wide and 5 1/4" wide. The tops have a very pretty carved design on them. This was the center Newell of a large staircase and has notches for treads and where it trimmed into wall. some nicks and dings. Paint splatters.salvaged. Condition. Each side features beautifully carved inset panels with quatrefoil and gothic arch detailing; the newel is crowned with a cluster of acorns and leaves. Description This is a great piece that was salvaged from a Philadelphia. PA Victorian Home. It is made of oak and is unpainted. It has its original finial at the top. The shaft has three raised panels on each side. It is not notches for the step. It measures 57.25 inches tall by 8 inches square at the base and 6 square at the shaft. Overall. It is in good condition. There are misc. scratches and dings as it is antique. It could use a good cleaning. There are some light chips here and there. There are some nail holes. Pr. Victorian Carved Gothic Elizabethan oak Lion Heraldic Newel post finials
Pair of Circa 1890 English carved oak newel post finials in the form of heraldic lions holding shields. Matched pair are mirror image. Hand carved pieces guaranteed 19th c. Elizabethan Tudor style. These were cut off a larger section of post and so do not have screw holes on bottom. I have been keeping them for a future project or stairs, but I'm letting go of some projects. These lions are fantastic pieces and measure 8" tall. They sit evenly and flat. just need a mounting hole drilled.
