Antique Newel Post Figure Statue Spelter w/ Wood Base 16" T incl Banner The spelter metal newel post figure dates to early 1900s. It measures 12" to the top of the head and 16" to the top of the removable banner. The statue looks as if it has the original gilded patina. It has been repaired or painted a gloss on the top of the base and part of the top of the banner cross appears to be missing. Interesting shabby chic look that would look neat once again gracing a newel post or as a part of a collection of early English or American figures.

This is a beautiful antique ornate carved wood architectural salvage column top which can also be used as a display shelf. I'm fairly certain it dates from the late 19th century. 1880s or 1890s. It measures 7 7/8 inches tall(20 cm) Depending on which you call the top or the bottom. One measures 12 5/8 inches x 5 1/2 inches(32 cm x 14 cm) and the other measures 8 1/2 inches x 3 1/4 inches(21.6 cm x 8.3 cm) Given its many fleur de lis and the way it was made. I believe it's French. There are no nails, only glue, wood pegs and splining. There is a 1 inch(2.54 cm) x 1/4 inch(63 cm) chipped off piece of wood in the center a few inches from the top(or bottom) One of the large pieces of carving in the corner has a scrape to the front(please see photo) Other than this. There are a few dents, nicks, chips, scratches, scuff marks and age-related ... morecracks. But overall, it's a great looking piece and is very sturdy. I took most of the photographs with the large part on the bottom. But it can be used either way. It weighs 3 pounds 7 1/2 ounces(1.57 kg)

Has some weight to it(20 lbs) and is 45' high with the square sections measuring 4 3/4' across. The post stands by itself and is level. The floor in my butler's pantry of our 100+ year old house is way off, not the column. There are a couple of places where there is a crack although solid and nothing moving. There is a'slice' out of the top ball as shown. All of these flaws are fixable if desired. Though of different color tones: looks like one was stripped and refinished to a lighter color, the other was left in original stain, a deep mahogany color. Both have a fine grain, and look to me like walnut, though they may be another hardwood. They were likely salvaged from a side-board or similar piece of furniture that dated to circa 1900.
