This is a beautiful and important reliquary with three relics included. It is cast brass and measures approximately 15 x 6.5 x 6.5 inches. The top removes for access to the relics. Two of the glass sides are cracked but would be very easy to replace. The 3 relics hang on a removable felt covered block of wood inside the reliquary. Altman sold this bag for $155.00. At least 25 years ago. This is in near mint condition The only flaw or wear is the person stored the bag with the strap tied in a knot. Antique Cloth Pouch w/Medals & Wood Fragment Relic (True Cross?)
I was raised Catholic but I'm not sure what this small pouch was intended for. perhaps to keep in a wallet or pocket for protection. Prayer, or devotionals. It measures about 2-1/8" square. The exterior at one time was probably a darker shade of green which appears to have been applied over a golden color cloth. You can see where the gold color shows through throughout the exterior from wear. The female half of the original snap closure on the top flap is missing. As is at least one of the medals inside. You can see on the right hand facing side the bale for a small tin medal sewn on, but the medal itself is massing. Also, there is a tiny pouch which looks to have had something in it at one point, but no longer does. Sewn in to the inside of the pouch. Some words I can't quite totally make out(League of the Sa-ufact of All) and"The Apostleship of Prayer" and in smaller lettering"B.O.W. British Made" Finally there is a cloth and crocheted relic with a clear sewn-on cover depicting an unidentified sainted nun and a tiny wood fragment. perhaps a true cross fragment. Roman Catholic Reliquary intended to hold a Relic of The True Cross Housed in an 800 silver& gilt wire filigree cruciform reliquary. The relic itself is not present. The white cross on which it rested is present. Below it is the Latin inscription. Crucis D. N. I. C. the letters stand for Dominus Noster Iesus Christus. Translated, The Cross of our Lord Jesus Christ. The round relic case is also 800 silver gilt set with paste jewels. It is removable from the reliquary stand. It bears the wax seal of the bishop who authenticated the original relic. The reliquary stand is made of 800/1000 grade silver. It is cruciform. With a solid back and filigree face, and stands on a three step base with a handle at its back to facilitate veneration by the faithful. It is also set with paste jewels.
