Vintage Japanese Rubber Stamp Shiga Shrine (137)
This was an amazing find. They are from the"昭和" showa period" The"showa" period is from 1926-1989 but these are about 30 years old. These were used in a school. The stamp is rubber but it is attached to a sponge like base. Please look at all the pic tures so you u nderstand how the stamp is mounted. This is a unique and cool design. It is a name of shrine- 志賀 shiga ="name of place in Japan" and 神社 jinjya ="shrine" It measures about 2cm wide. The base is"squishy" so you can really push down. Rare Older Chinese Traveling Shrine Three Deities Budai( Fat Buddha) Wei Tao& Guan Yu 6” Tall China Late 20th century Item Description: Measurement: Height 6” inches(15.2 cm) Width 3” inches(7.6 cm) Open Width 6.5” inches(16.5 cm) Depth 2.5” inches(6.4 cm) This is an older Chinese Traveling shrine; it is nicely detailed on the outside and opens to reveal three Chinese deities. The primary in the center is Budai in folklore is admired for his happiness. Plenitude, and wisdom of contentment. One belief popular in folklore maintains that rubbing his belly brings wealth, good luck, and prosperity. In Japan. Hotei persists in folklore as one of the Seven Lucky Gods( Shichi Fukujin) of Taoism. Some Buddhist traditions consider him a Buddha or a bodhisattva. Often identifying him with Maitreya(the future Buddha) In the altar door to his right ... moreis Wei Tuo who is the great Dharma Protector in Buddhism. Wei Tuo(Skanda) is described as a young man fully clad in the armor and headgear of a Chinese general. And is usually leaning on a vajra staff. In the altar door to her left is The General Guan Yu. A historical figure well known for his role in the novel The Romance of the Three Kingdoms. He is also known for his powerful weapon the quan dong which he always carries. The shrine is decorated on the outside and has three different panels on the back with what I think might be a dogwood. Lotus and Peony, has characters on the front shrine with floral panel in the center. This traveling shrine stands 6” tall and is 3” wide, when opened it measures 6 ½” wide. It is in very good condition, at the lower left hand in the back it looks like a hairline crack maybe a repair not too noticeable I found it looking for any defects. Hinges are tight. Weighs just under a pound. Has a chop on the bottom. And have been treasured by several owners.  Small splits, scrapes and cracks are a normal part of their patina attesting to their age and extensive use. We examine each piece carefully when we receive it and report any damage we find in our listings. Please look carefully at the pictures which may also reveal condition and damage. Damage. Repair: Age cracks. Old bug damage, age cracks, traces of exposure to the elements, holes, chips. Additional Information: An interesting figure carved out of light colored ... morewood. Highly abstracted with no facial features and without sexual identity with rudimentary sculptural lines and extended folked legs. This sculpture featuring a forked branch in the form of an inverted Y with small head and rudimentary facial features, a long body without any indication of navel and genitalia. Such figures where found among a number of peoples from Burkina Faso and Togo. This comes probably from the Dagara(or Dagaari) or from the Lobi people where such figures known as Kpin Seble were used as ancestor figures and placed on the family shrine. The Dagara or Daagari people are a small group usually considered as one of the main clans that form the Lobi ethnic group. The Dagara live in south west Burkina Faso spilling over into northern Ghana. The Daagari share language and culture with their neighbors the Lobi. Little is known about their art. And art objects from this people are extremely rare. A Dagara sculpture of this type is published in Christopher D. Roy and Thomas G.B. Wheelock, LAND OF THE FLYING MASKS, 2007, fig. 211. There is a couple of small fihures standing on the base. The male is blowing a flute. This well used figure comes from the Yoruba people of Nigeria. The surface shows much handling and evidence that it was worn down through time as the figure has been receiving ritual substances over the years and remains of pigment( white and blue indigo) and feathers iare still seen on the surface with traces of encrustation over the body. Thefigure represents Eshu(Esu) The Yoruba deity who carries messages and offerings to the gods and is best known as the trickster god of their pantheon. Also known as Elegba. He is the deity of the crossroads, one who confuses us or directs us to avoid dangers. Eshu(Esu) manipulates creative energies. Communicates with the gods, and embraces secret knowledge. He can become invisible, appear in an instant, and mystify us by her actions or appearance. Elegba(Eshu) is known through a number of symbolic motifs. Vintage Shanghai China Diamond Lgo Pyramid Shrine Shaped Mechanical Alarm Clock
The only writing I see on this clock is Shanghai China along with some Chinese writing. There is also a diamond logo just above the hands and a red alarm dial just above that. It works great. But is missing one of the keys. The key that is with the clock looks like a replacement key, but I was able to remove it easily and use it to wind both stems. The alarm stem is almost flush with the back of the clock, but I was able to pull it out using my fingernails. It measures aprox. 6 3/4" X 4 1/2" and the body is made out of plastic.
