This is a very rare antique wooden ID card from a Shinto Shrine of a girl with the birth date and her birth place. The inscription on the front of the piece reads"Born in the region of Tajima(present day Hyogo Prefecture of Japan) The Ujiko of Mio Shinto shrine of Kami-Yamanoi Village. July 28th in 1840(the 11th year of Tepo. The Year of Kano-e-ne) Toshisaburo, ... moreas the second son of Nunoya Seitaro. Mio Shinto shrine was established in 787 and located in present day Yamanoi Cho of Himeji City of Hyogo Prefecture in Japan. The present day shrine was built in 1619. The back of the piece reads"Issued by Shasho. Tokihide Komatsubara, the Year of Kanoto-no-Hitsuji, the 4th year of Meiji, 1871. Shasho means a Shinto priest and he was a priest of Yamanoi Village who had issed the ID card. The failure of crops in 1833. Which soon became a lengthy disaster endured for over four years called the Great Tenpo Famine, was caused mainly due to poor weather conditions. Because crops could not grow under these circumstances, prices began to skyrocket. These dire circumstances sparked many rebellions and riots across Japan over the course of the Tepo years. The Tenpo era is often described as the beginning of the end of the Tokugawa government. Though the era accomplished much through its reforms. And also culturally speaking, the injury inflicted on the Tokugawa system of government during the Tenpo period was unparalleled. In the meantime. These gourd bowls are all placed upon a half of a gourd that has numerous strings threaded into it with all of the decorative devices tied and knotted at their ends to create a dome of color.The whole container would be a gourd ... moresplit in half. A half would be used as the bowl and the other half as a lid. Such containers were used by the Fon of Benin to keep valuable items or cosmetics. Interestingly. At this point, it is hard to determine precisely which divinity was worshipped here. However, the colour of the thread(purple) as well as the holes in the upper part of the lid would suggest a belonging to Sakpata or Shakpanan, earth god in charge of small pox. Amazing Lot of Five(5) Vintage Japanese Copper Metal Ashtrays NIKKO National Park Japan Toshogu Shrine There are two different pictures. 2 of one style and 3 of the other style, although they are very similar. All five have a beautiful border of fierce dragons and they're almost the same pictures but two of the ashtrays say"NIKKO" on the front of the ashtray under the shrine and are marked"MADE IN JAPAN" on the back. The other three have a similar picture of the shrine but also shows Japan underneath and lists each country. One of those three is the one that had some damage from being used. They're all in fair to good condition. With only one being really dim and faded. The other four are really beautiful! Please check pictures carefully. Vintage Will Rogers Shrine of the Sun Colorado Springs Colorado Salt and Pepper Shaker Set with small Tray. Made in Japan. Shakers measures 2" tall each while tray measures 5" x 3 1/2" This unique set is vintage and does have some age wear and blemishes, especially on side of one of the shakers as seen in last pic, but overall, pretty nice condition for its age. Both shakers still have cork in the bottoms.
