The complex imagery of standing figures in two registars is tentativelly attributed to the Igala. But it can be stylistically placed among one of the differing but related peoples in northern Nigeria. This interesting sculpture shares a number of stylistic elements with a number of the small groups living in Northern Nigeria in the region of the confluence of the Niger and Benue Rivers. This is an area of mixed art and influences and shared sculptural styles as documented by Sieber where he notes an Idoma carver observing Igala sculptors at work and subsequently carving for both Igala and Idoma patrons. Sieber 1961:9) The upper reaches of the Niger River at the confluence with the Benue River opens to broad grassy plains where the Igala people who number approximately 300.000 live and where in the past they had a strong kingdom. Today this kingdom is primarily ceremonial or ritualized with little real power. To complicate the matter the Igala also share a number of artistic traditions with their neighbors the Basa-Nge. They're in their"Just Carved" state. After this stage they would have been coated with a black lacquer and then with a gold mackie lacquer. And yes, that's Tokyo with an I. This company is still in existance, and still producing the same quality pieces, though their equivilant to this piece runs about $3,350. This is a very beautiful piece with hand worked carvings and cabinetry work. Please see all of the photos and know that the true beauty comes more with being able to see it in person and the pictures do it no justice. Stands at 18" Tall by 12" Wide and is 9" Deep. The finish around the two sides. Back and top is a black laquer finish, with a rustic wave patterning to it. The front has a similar black laquer painting, along with a red and brown wood painted pattern to the doors and ... morethe bottom drawer. There is also a small altar shelf that pulls out from under the doors and above the drawer. The inside is gilted with gold and black painting. It is from the National Shrine in Gettysburg. PA. Depicts the Lincoln Speech Memorial, Gen. Geo. G. Meade, Soldier's National Monument, Abe Lincoln, Gen. Robt. E. Lee, the Eternal Light Peace Memorial. It is in great shape. No chips or cracks. No stains,wear or discoloration. Zigua Female Shrine Figure, collected in the '60s
A dramatic female shrine figure; the rendering of the ears and neck indicate that it's from the Zigua people of Tanzania. The figure is holding a bowl with human feet. Which probably had a lid in the shape of a head at one point, and has a hole in its head that probably once held a horn filled with empowering material. I purchased this piece from an auction in Washington state that was selling off a large collection of Central and Eastern African pieces collected in the 1960s. The custom base, of black-painted Lucite, indicates its age. The figure measures an imposing 23 inches tall, 6 inches across, and 5 inches deep. International bidders are welcome. c1900 Chile Pomaire Shrine of Crucifixion in Maipo Valley Photo Lantern Slide
This is a photographic glass magic lantern slide. Black and white, labeled, Shrine ibn Pomaire near Santiago. Pomaire is a Chilean town in the commune of Melipilla in Melipilla Province, Santiago Metropolitan Region. Abundant natural clay in the hills surrounding the town bolstered a thriving pottery industry in the community. Lantern slides are one of the best untapped sources of antique photographs there are. Slides were usually discarded after a relatively short period of use so are difficult to find. Slide is 3 1/4" x 4" is in very good condition, and can be viewed by projecting, holding it to the light, or placing it on a light box. This slide can be made into a photograph or poster. Vintage Jesus Sacred Heart Plaster Chalkware Statue Bust Shrine
This vintage chalkware candle shrine/ bust/statue of the Sacred Heart of Jesus was produced in the 1930s by the Penna Statuary Co. Inc. It stands about 12" tall and 10" wide, approx. 6.5" front to back. This was originally used for sick call visits by the priest. There would be two candles in the small recessed holders in front. As well as a crucifix in the center. The back panel would open and holy water and a cloth corporal would be there for administering the last rites or anointing of the sick on a home visit. On this shrine. The crucifix and sliding metal back door are missing. One of the brass liners to one of the recessed candle holders is missing. However, they still hold candles(not included) and any small crucifix can be placed in the recessed crucifix holder. We have displayed this in our home for a long time without ... moreit and it is still very attractive. We are only letting it go because we have an overabundance of Sacred Heart images in our home and very little space! Across the base are the words" I will bless every place where an image of my heart shale be exposed and venerated. Excellent condition for its age. Only a few small paint flakes here and there. This is about 2½ ounces of sand from the El Santuario de Chimayo Shrine From El Santuario De Chimayo: http:www.elsantuariodechimayo.us The Legend of"Nuestro Señor de Esquipulas" Legend has it that the Santuario de Chimayo. Also called the Santuario de Nuestro Señor de Esquipulas, was built after a local friar performing penances saw a strange light burst from a hillside near the Santa Cruz River. Curious. The friar sought the source of the light, which was coming from the ground. Dropping to his knees and digging in the sandy soil with his bare hands, he uncovered a crucifix, later christened Nuestro Señor de Esquipulas. Three times this crucifix was taken in procession to the ... moreneighboring village and three times it disappeared. Only to be found again back in its hole in the hillside. Deciding that Our Lord of Esquipulas wanted to stay in Chimayo, the people built a small chapel on the site of the discovery. Soon the miraculous healings began. And by 1816 the original chapel had been replaced by the current Santuario. In what is. To many, the"official" version of this story, Bernardo Abeyta, an early Chimayo settler and member of the Penitentes(a Roman Catholic brotherhood that observes certain rites related to the passion of Christ) actually discovered the crucifix, also while performing penances.
