Rare old Tanimbar Tavu Shrine figure, Indonesian Tribal Art Masterpiece
This is an exceedingly rare find from the Tanimbar islands of Eastern Indonesia. In my 25+ years selling Ethnographic art and traveling to Indonesia. I have never come across one until now. Noble families of Tanimbar create large ornate altars[ tavu] to worship their deified ancestors. The legendary founders of the village. The altars support the central roof beams of the great houses and are positioned close to where unmarried daughters sleep. Valuables and ancestral remains—skulls, bones and wooden effigies—are stored around the ornate sculptures which serve a protective function and preserve communal fertility. This idol was placed atop the shrine in the rafters of the home. It has survived this long because it was partially protected from the elements. 22 inches tall x 20 inches wide.

This sculpture is from the Igbo people and belongs to the category of the Ikenga shrine piece. Its age is obvious from the well-worn surface. This sculpture depicts a male anthropomorphic figure with horns. The human head surmounted with large horns. The figure holds a staff and a head representing that of the victim. This figure represents a triumphant warrior standing tall over his victims. An Ikenga is a personal shrine dedicated to the individualâs courage and physical strength. It comes from the Igbo of Nigeria who are the largest tribal grouping along the lower Niger River and the Niger Delta Region. Igbo art is diverse in its many forms. Materials, and use, and is broken into a number of sub-styles based upon history and the local physical environment. Much of their art is open to public view where the Igbo are reminded of their ancestors and of the various spirits of the Igbo pantheon of gods.
