This 3-Handled Glass Mug commemorates the Syria Temple Shrine. Of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Niagara Falls trip, in 1905. It measures approximately 3 3/4" high and 3 1/4" in diameter, at the top, and features two Niagara Falls scenes. The piece has nice detailing, with sword-shaped handles, beading around the scenes, a rope design along the bottom, and gold gilt decoration. Raised lettering indicates'Syria' Pittsburgh, PA' Niagara Falls' and'June 1905' Apart from some expected minor wear to the gilt on the sword handles, lettering and beading, it is in excellent condition with no chips or cracks. I've been doing some digging and cannot find out where'Fox Valley' is. I know that there is a Fox Valley in Wisconsin. And an area near Elmhurst Illinois is also called Fox Valley. But, I cannot narrow it down because the Fox Valley Shrine Club has nothing online. So, maybe this Shrine Club no longer exists. There are a couple of small'dings' on the outside of this glass. And a few bubbles that got stuck during the molding process. There are no chips or cracks on it, and the printing is in awesome condition. I would bet that this glass was probably used at this 10th anniversary party and was placed on a shelf or in a box afterwords. It is NOT signed on the base. ONE OF A KIND CUSTOM VINTAGE ANTIQUE RED LACQUER WALL TABLE SHRINE CABINET
Hello all. Welcome. ITEM DESCRIPTION: Custom. One of a kind, hand made Chinese Red Lacquer prayer shrine cabinet. Hand built with hand carved accents of dragons. Can be used on a table or hung“properly” by the hooks attached to cabinet. Bottom tray that extends to display additional items. The carved dragon header piece is hinged and can lower down. A red light bulb and a multi-outlet adapter box to plug in any accessories such as a table fountain was added later. I believe that it was wired for China since the thin metal plug tongs do not fit snug in a US outlet but you can buy the adapter or re-wire it. I think that 2 of the plugs on the multi-outlet are US. But not grounded since this is old, so it does not fit the current standard large end grounded plug, although you can buy those adapters for just a $1 or so. ITEM CONDITION: Excellent ... morestructural condition. No cracks or major defects. A couple of minor dings and scuffs. Minor dust. Smudges, and a little tape residue which seem to be able to clean of with proper care. I just wiped of the dust for photos and avoided any chemicals or moisture. ITEM APPROXIMATE DIMENSIONS: 16” deep X 18” wide X 26 1/2” high. The tray extended makes the depth 26 1/2” The hinged carved header piece lowered drops it to about 24” high. ADDITIONAL COMMENTS: If you've read the additional comments of some of my other items you may already know 2013 will have many really nice items coming from a traveling world collector that I'll be helping liquidate his boxed up items. This was one of two shrines I bought from him with the other being 6 feet tall. The story behind these are that they were built in China at the early part of the 20 th Century for a textile business to have in their office were they paid their respects and lit incense. That textile business moved to San Francisco California in the late 50's or early 60's and the shrines moved with them. RARE 19thC Qing Dynasty Nobility Family Shrine's Ancester Worship Wood Tablet.
Offered for sale is a very rare Chinese Qing dynasty ancestor worship tablet. Based on the inscription. The tablet seems to belong a nobility. The tablet was in this nobility family shrine. I don't quite understand the inscription about this tablet, but it mentioned about Qing emperor. And the civilian was not allowed to use dragon to decorate the tablet. The carving is very good. It does has minor damage, such as some broken beard and old worm bites on the lower part to stick into the wooden base, may be one or 2 small chips. The sandwich like base is missing the center part, originally there was a heavy thick board in between the 2 boards, please see pictures#6& 11, I think it is easy to replace a new one. Most Ikenga are generally sculpted as a male anthropomorphic figure with rams horns rising vertically from the head. This example shows a man's head surmounted with two strong vertical horns. A human head stands on a cylindrical form surrounded by two heads and various dotted and linear motifs; the all sculpture being set on a four-legged circular stool-like pedestal. This figure probably depicts a triumphant warrior standing tall over his victims or attendants( An Ikenga is a personal shrine dedicated to the individualâs courage and physical strength. It comes from the Igbo of Nigeria who are the largest tribal grouping along the lower Niger River and the Niger Delta Region. Igbo art is diverse in its many forms. Traces of pigment and feathers indicate this figure was used as a shrine piece and was receiving sacrificial materials. This figurine is identified with the Lobi people. The Lobi people. Who live in Burkina Faso and Ghana, revere spirits known as Thil, and build shrines to them, which are filled with figures like this one. These figures, known as Bateba, are believed to embody the Thil spirits. The Bateba are looked upon as living beings charged with special powers who move, fight against witches, and have intercourse with each other. The Lobi believe that the Bateba are superior to humans, but inferior to the Thil spirits, so the Bateba is first activated by putting it in a Thil shrine. The surface shows signs of extensive uses and good age. It was placed in a family shrine for a long time and would be of good addition in any collection. Lobi sculpture is known for its numerous styles. Sub-styles and figural varieties and ranges of size and though not as polished as sculptures from other groups to the south of them such as the Senufo in the Ivory Coast, this attached couple has a basic sculptural integrity to it. Representing spirits of the dead and the untamed forces of the wild bush the figures protect the family from witchcraft and the ever-present threat of the forces of the bush, untamed and with potential for doing harm. Spread across three countries. The Lobi today live in small villages in individual fort-like family compounds surrounded by cultivated fields. These shrine plaques have been used by the rural village population of India as shrines inside their homes and local village temples and have been frequently worshipped during puja ceremonies. Thick cast bronze with excellent smooth darkened patina. It shows a multi-armed Virabhadra with bearded fierce face. Topped by a cobra head. The figure is flanked by a smaller Parvati Figure and her father Daksha. Age: late 18th to early 19th century. Size: Height = 19.5 cm; width = 13.5 cm; depth = 2 cm. A unique Japanese fluted bronze vase from the late Meiji Era(c. 1910) It was used to hold flowers and evergreens in the traditional Japanese butsudan(Buddhist shrine) These family heirlooms were handed down from generation to generation. This particular bronze vase was cast over 100 years ago and features a bird nesting in the branches of a peaceful garden. It has been well used yet well loved and has a deep aged patina; it is overall in very fine condition. The bottom of the piece is signed Shuuho by the Japanese artisan. It has a very attractive shape with a fluted top and a waisted bottom. It measures 5 1/4" high by 4" across(13 x 10 cm) and is a nice heavy bronze that holds water and would make an exceptional flower container. You'll love it. And many of them crossed the border into contemporary Côte d'Ivoire over the next hundred years or so in search of uncultivated lands. Although Lobi villages are often very independent and so politically disorganized, they managed to put up a strong resistance to French colonialization. They revere spirits known as Thil. Shrines are built to these spirits under the instruction of a sorcerer and placed either on the roof or inside the home and are filed with objects such as vessels, abstract iron figures, stone and wood figures known as Bateba, which are believe to embody the Thil spirits. Lobi Bateba figures may be small or very large in size. They typically have slightly bent legs with roughly carved feet and an enlarged head with a high smooth or grooved coiffure. Some type of Bateba may be carved with different postures corresponding to various Thil. Statues with single raised arm symbolize a dangerous Thil, while copulating couples or maternity figures are believed to enhance the fertility of women living in the house.
