Fantastic& original Japanese Shinto Shrine Ema Votive Painting of a young prostitute being led away by a pimp. Dated Showa 2(1927) In the painting the young woman, with a forlorn look on her face, is holding a parasol to protect her complexion while carrying her bags. The pimp is slightly ahead of her and, being the gentleman that he is, is carrying one of her bags in his left hand, while holding a cigarette in his right hand. He appears to be telling her to hurry along. In the early Showa era, many young women from the countryside were sold into prostitution by their families in order to pay off debts. This votive painting was made to keep the girl safe as it was believed that Ema paintings could offer wishes directly to the Shinto Gods. The painting is on wood& measures 9 X 11 1/2 inches. Antique 30s Metal Collie Chas Coughlin Shrine of the Little Flower Dog Souvenir
Antique metal Collie Father Charles E. Coughlin Shrine of the Little Flower Royal Oak. Michigan dog souvenir. This unusual and unique souvenir dog is from the Shrine of the Little Flower Parrish in Royal Oak, Michigan from the late 1920's to early 1930's when the highly controversial Father Coughlin was a priest there. Coughlin later started the National Union for Social Justice and had a nationally broadcast controversial radio show through the 30's. The collie is in absolutely excellent condition, solid very heavy and highly detailed possibly bronze or copper, and measures 3" wide and 2 1/2" tall. Congo fetishes gets their strength from the spirits embedded in the nkisi. Nail and mirror fetishes are a unique and important phenomenon of Kongo sculpture. In the Kongo. All these fetishes are called nkisi. Nkisi means“medicine” Historically. There were two types of nkisi. Public and private, with some having vital democratizing roles, as sources of empowerment for rural residents and individuals outside the court. Fine Songye Shrine Fetish, DRC. Great patina.
Songye fetish figures are usually male and stand on a circular base. Strips of metal. Nails or other paraphernalia are sometimes applied over the face, which counteract evil spirits and aggressors and channel lightings against them. The top of the head and the abdomen are usually hollowed to allow insertion of fetish material, called boanga. These figures adopt a hieratic posture. The hands placed on a pointed abdomen; on top of the head is a horn or feathers reinforcing a disquieting appearance. These horns are filled with magic ingredients consisting of a wide variety of animal, vegetable, mineral and human substances that activate and bring into play benevolent ancestral spirits. The face is often covered with nails or metal circular chips, a reminder of smallpox. SANTUARIO SANCTUARY OF CHIMAYO NM 1922 ROOF TIN SHRINE- BOBBY GARCIA Pickup Only
A shrine to the Virgin of Guadalupe(Our Lady of Guadalupe) made by Bobby Garcia. Who replaced the old 1922 tin roof on the Santuario(Sanctuary) in Chimayo New Mexico with a new roof in 1989. The Santuario is known for healing. People make pilgrimages to the site. The Santuario is the only Catholic religious healing site in North America. It was built on an old Native American Tewa site known for its earth with healing powers. This shrine is made of the old 1922 roof tin. It is mounted on a log post. Personally. I would remove the log post and put the shrine on a shelf or table. Here are the measurements: Shelf to the top of the cross 21 1/2" Width at widest point 22" The little down-folding part from the shelf is 4 1/2 inches in height Post is 24 1/2 inches.
