Construction began in 1922, the building was dedicated in 1932, and the interior finally completed in 1970. Offered for sale is a beautiful clear glass oval tray or platter. Made by Fostoria, U.S.A. It's the fifth issue in the AMERICAN MILESTONES series, and is titled SHRINE OF DEMOCRACY. It has a satin-finished relief image of Mount Rushmore in the center, and an elaborate shiny border of shields and garlands around the edge. The entire plate has a bright rainbow iridescence, like carnival glass(picture 3) and is marked Fostoria 1975 on the lower right(picture 4) The plate measures 10 1/2 inches(26.7cm) long. This figure is shown in a common Urhobo stance seen in other larger Urhobo sculpted ancestral figures known as edjo. The straightforward position of this figure with the lower arms bent at right angles with a slightly opened mouth all topped by a European style hat. The figure shows age and long use through the timeless surface with signs of wear throughout the body. Liittle is known about objects of this type. Figures among the Urhobo. A part from the fact that among the Urhobo such figures were mainly used as persomal shrine(Iphri) which uses are similar to those of the Ikenga Shrine figures from the Igbo. Stains, holes, Top and bottom are not an identical fit when put together Additional Information: Colorful plastic disks were stacked as part of the decoration or serving as dividers for beads are attached at the top of an half calabash that was served as a lid of a box. These gourd bowls are all placed upon a half of a gourd that has numerous strings threaded into it with all of the decorative devices tied and knotted at their ends to create a dome of color.The whole container would be a gourd split in half. ... moreA half would be used as the bowl and the other half as a lid. Such containers were used by the Fon of Benin to keep valuable items or cosmetics. Interestingly. A very similar box from The Robbins Center For Cross Cultural Communication. Washington, D.C. was recently sold at Sotheby's for $9.375(see Sotheby's New York 16 May 2013) And the catalogue note stated: A closely related shrine vessel in the Metropolitan Museum of Art is described as follows(inv. no. 2007.215.7a.B" commentary by Joseph Adande, August 8th, 2007) This vessel] definitely belongs to a vodun or orisha devotee. At this point, it is hard to determine precisely which divinity was worshipped here. However, the colour of the thread(purple) as well as the holes in the upper part of the lid would suggest a belonging to Sakpata or Shakpanan, earth god in charge of small pox. This god is also called'je non. On another hand, the great number of shells might suggest an Odudua affiliation or an Oshun belonging. Original Tomikichiro Tokuriki Woodblock Print "Plum Trees at Kitano Shrine"
Tokuriki Tomikichio(1902- 1999) was born in Kyoto where he attended the School of Fine Arts and Crafts. He was part of the Sosaku-hanga movement in Japan. Well known for his woodblock printmaking with the majority of his work in the Shin-hanga style. Tomikichio worked primarily out of Matsukyo Publishing Company. His own publishing business. His works were also published by Uchida and Unsoda. This piece. Plum Trees at Kitano Shrine. Is a mid-20th century edition in excellent condition. It brings Shin-hanga traditional themes of landscapes, famous places, and flowers together. It captures the walkway leading to the historical Kitano Shrine in Kyoto. A lone figure approaches the shrine along the stone walkway, flanked by stone lanterns and a statue of an ox bull. The statue near the entrance to Kitano is believed to have healing properities ... moreif one rubs the bull's nose. Kitano is known for its thousands of plum trees. Tomikichiro captures the buds and white blossom. Along with the distant hills and pines. This work is done in washes of gray and a lovely use of light. It is part of a series entitled Thirty Views of Kyoto. Plum Trees at Kitano Shrine was given to our family in the 1980s. It has been framed under glass for as long as we have owned it. I opened the frame to post pictures of the actual work. There is slight water damage at the bottom edge of the back piece upon which Tomikichio's work is mounted. The actual woodblock print is in excellent condition. The piece measures 11 1/8" by 9 3/4" Plus the small margins, as shown in photos. The overall measurement including the mounting is approximately 14" by 16" The signature on the bottom left corner includes his name. Tomikichio, the words Kitano Jinja(jinja signifies temple) and his Shin-hanga seal. I am excited to pass this along to someone who will treasure it!

Shrine reliquary shaped miniature chapel. It is made of gilded glass and metal. It can be opened by removing the roof to access the relic. Dimensions: 11 x 7.8 x 5.2 in(28 x 19.8 x 13.3 cm) Weight: 2lb 11 oz 4 glasses are in good condition. Some stains. Traces clippings on the velvet inside. The cross is missing on the top of the tent. Inside is one of the Saints nails of the crucifixion performed by the monks of the Basilica of the Holy Cross in Rome in the 19th century. This production is a true copy of the original and touched a genuine highlight of the Lord's passion at the Basilica. The red wax seal assures the authenticity of the relic. I note that the ribbon was replaced because it étaait this fragmented due to rust. Vintage Religious Shrine Altar Byzantine? Greek?
Offered for sale is this vintage Religious Shrine or altar. Not sure what it is of but looks like pictures I have seen of ancient Greek or Byzantine type icons. It has a lot of hand tooling on the metal with 1949 on either side. There are 3 iconic pictures in the recessed areas. I am not sure what the metal is but is does tarnish slightly and when I rubbed it off it is very shiny underneath. Possible silver but no makers mark that I can see. This is a very nicely realized in detail pewter figurine of Mt. Rushmore. It was made by Hudson Fine Pewter USA in 1982. The figurine measures 3 5/8" long X 1 5/8" tall and weighs about 9 ounces unpacked. There is a small nick in the metal on left side back that is not disfiguring and can not be seen from the front.
