This was a Bob Morton Circus produced for the Des Moines. Iowa based Za-Ga-Zig Shrine Temple from their April 24 to 29th, 1933 engagement. There's a small split on the lower 2" of the cover at the seam. The show included the John Robinson Military elephants, Kenneth Waite, Paul Jerome, the Sherman Bros. and Harry LaPearl clowning, Frank Shepherd on the single trapeze, and a Bob Fisher flying act among others. ART PRINT Title: AT THE GARDEN SHRINE. POMPEII" ARTIST: John William Godward(9 August 1861– 13 December 1922) was an English painter from the end of the Pre-Raphaelite/ Neo-Classicist era. He was a protégé of Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema but his style of painting fell out of favour with the arrival of painters like Picasso. He committed suicide at the age of 61 and is said to have written in his suicide note that"the world was not big enough" for him and a Picasso. His already estranged family. Who had disapproved of his becoming an artist, were ashamed of his suicide and burned his papers. No photographs of Godward are known to survive. Works Godward was a Victorian Neo-classicist. And therefore a follower in theory of Frederic Leighton. However, he is more closely allied stylistically to Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema, with ... morewhom he shared a penchant for the rendering of Classical architecture, in particular, static landscape features constructed from marble. A fetish is a statue or object with magical power. Like an amulet, talisman or good luck charm. In traditional, tribal Africa, especially in Zaire, these beliefs are manifested in some of the most expressive and magical power figures ever created. This exhibit brings together the relics of many peoples, all used for specific functions, usually to conjure away evil spirits or attempt to control one's destiny. Common to many tribes was the belief that the fetishes acquired power through the ritualistic carving and consecration, the addition of special substances and the recurring activation of its spirit by offering sacrifices and magic words. Some fetishes have the heads or stomachs hallowed out to hold special substances; some have mirrors to reflect back evil or to blind hostile spirits; some are Janus-figures for better vigilance and ... moreprotection. Among the materials added to the wood figures are horns, shells, nails, feathers, mirrors, metal, twine, paint, cloth, raffia, fur, beads and herbs; anything thought to add power or magic. This very fine 18th century antique Edo Japanese carved. Lacquered& gilt wood Kannon(Kwan-Yin) shrine figure, mounted within its original painted pine cabinet, is a masterpiece of Edo period artistry and craftsmanship. It is in superb condition and has the original crown and jewelry of the period and is entirely original and complete except for 2 small missing finials on the railing surrounding the base of the figure. The case has a repaired crack on the top but is otherwise in very fine condition. The figure measures 14. 5 inches tall and the case is 22.5 inches high. Hand built with hand carved accents of dragons in multiple areas and carved Lotus flower header. 2 drawers which each have 2 Mother of Pearl inlay designs. There's a tray that extends from just above the drawers to display additional items. The Lotus flower header piece is hinged and can lower down. Exceptional detail in the layered top section of the cabinet which can be seen in image#7. I couldn't get a true translation of the Chinese script from the previ ous owner but he exp lained it to me an something like this. Y ou can buy the adapters or replace the multi-outlets altogether. I can't do this piece just ice with my photography and 12 pictures so please understand that through it's minor defects it's stunning and like many of my customers have found. There is p eeling of the varnish on the drawer fronts as s hown in image#11. S ome crazing of the varnish. B ut not peeling, on the top and bottom shelves. this is a stunning extremely rare antique Japanese traveling handmade lacquer wood buddhist box. made in the 18th century it is completely handmade and depicts"Zushi" which is completely hand carved from wood and has an abundance o detailing and a wonderful gold gilting. the ora/ background of the the Buddha is a hammered and heavily embossed oval shaped piece of brass. Rare Large Japanese Meiji Period Lacquer Buddha Shrine of Kongosatta! This large beautiful Japanese traveling shrine is finished in red lacquer and trimmed with decorative carved brass hardware. It opens to reveal a gilt interior with shaped and painted panel at the top of the opening decorated with gilt fenghuangs on a dark blue ground. Inside is the Buddha Kongosatta(Japanese form of Vajrasattva) Seated upon a lotus throne, supported by four elephants, on each of which stands one of the Lokapala or guardians of the Four Cardinal Points, beneath them is another layer consisting of 18 additional elephants. It is delicately carved, painted and highlighted with gold gilt. The detail is superb and it dates from the Meiji period, circa 1868- 1912. The cabinet measures approximately 9 + 1/2 inches tall by 7 inches wide by 5 + 1/2 inches deep. ... moreThe Buddha statue itself measures approximately 7 + ¼ inches tall by 5 + 5/8 inches wide by 4 + ½ inches front to back. It is in excellent condition for its age with a chip at the top of the statue, along with some minor paint loss and the very last tiny elephant to the left in the bottom row has a chip on his trunk.
