In addition to larger examples such as this serpent that probably served as an altar object, women will attach smaller sinuous, flat-modeled images of serpents to the sides of their legs just above the ankle reaching up the leg close to the knee. Generally placed on the outer side of the leg they may often be on the inside of the leg or both sides as well. The bodies will be displayed with a sinuous set of curves as though the snakes were moving through the grass. The heads are simply defined as a triangular shape with the mouth possibly noted with a thin line beaten into the side of the face. The tails are depicted by a tapering form. This beautiful shrine is made of a resin and has incredible detail. The material looks like carved wood but has a waxy feel. In its closed cylindrical form. It travels easily. When unfolded, you get a highly detailed relief shrine of three Chinese gods. When closed. The shrine features a pagoda roof with Chinese characters and flowers on the sides. It looks like a beautiful building you would find in China. Inside. Are three deities: Erlang Shen, possibly Nezha, and Guan Yin. The center figure is the goddess Guan Yin She is synonymous with the Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara. The pinnacle of mercy, compassion, kindness and love. She is usually shown to wearing ... morenecklaces of Indian or Chinese royalty. In the right hand is a water jar(as the Sacred Vase the water jar also one of the Eight Buddhist Symbols of Good Fortune) containing pure water, the divine nectar of life, compassion and wisdom. In the left hand has a willow branch to sprinkle the divine nectar of life upon the devotees as to bless them with physical and spiritual peace. The willow branch is a symbol of being able to bend(or adapt) but not break. The willow is also used in shamanistic rituals and has had medicinal purposes as well. The crown usually depicts the image of Amitabha Buddha(Fully Conscious Infinite Light) Guan Yim's spiritual teacher before she became a Bodhisattva. Guan Yin is sometimes depicted as being flanked by two warriors. Two children, or two birds. The two figures beside Guan Yin here may or may not be the warriors Guan Yu. Maferefun Oya! Oya is a powerful Orisha. Owner of storms and change. Sometimes, we hold onto things that no longer serve. Oya helps us clear those things from our life and make way for new things, bringing in positive change. But change is not always easy and sometimes we resist it. Sometimes we need Oya's assistance but don't even realize it! Her winds may cause destruction, but there is always a seed that can only grow because of what has been taken away. Oya is the owner of the masks and it is a mask that inspired this shrine. When I saw that miniature African mask. The seed was planted for what I might create to honor one of my favorite Orishas. As you look at this shrine you will notice that I used 9 different masks. 9 is Oya's number. There is the African mask, two purple masks, two green mask, two leopard masks, one large ... moreVenetian mask with red rhinestones and one rhinestone studded mask. Oya is a warrior Orisha. Fierce and strong. To honor that part of Oya I have incorporate two machetes into the shrine. One of the items often associated with Oya is her fly wisk. I have made one from black horse hair and gave it a handle using copper wire. Copper is Oya's metal and I use it a lot in this piece. The shrine itself is painted copper with a burgundy interior. There are nine copper pinwheels on the altar(pinwheels make me think of wind, which belongs to Oya) and nine copper shapes on the sides and back of the shrine. As offerings to Oya. You will find on the burgundy carpeted floor there is a copper plate of 9 eggplants surrounded by copper glittered leaves. Oya is syncretized with Our Lady of Candelaria and her holy card will be included in your purchase. The piece is 7" tall by 5" wide by 4" deep. All of my spiritual art is one of a kind. I make these art pieces in devotion to the Saints that I may honor them with all my heart. The box is about 4.25 x 3 x 2 inches. Kwan-yin is about 2.75 inches tall. There is a lotus flower in the back of shrine. The top of the shrine is cut with a flower pattern and lets light onto the figure. Kwan-yin is beautifully carved. Everything is made of wood and its in a yellow silk bag.

Seated on his hind legs and with alert face and small eyes, the well muscled and sculpted dog wearing a form of kessho- mawashi(parade apron) of a grand champion sumo wrestler with sacred papers(in gold) and tied with the huge rope and bow characteristic of the Yokozuna(grand champion) Gilding rubbed in places. The glaze of matte white suffused with small even crackle throughout. There is no tradition of having dogs fight in Japan, rather that on special occasions, e.g. the new year celebrations of the dog year, a specially presented dog might be shown at one of the shrine pavilions honoured as symbolic of the kami(sacred spirit) of the year. ANTIQUE 100 YEAR OLD JAPANESE BUDDHIST SHRINE BRONZE TEMPLE BELL W/PAD
This is a cast bronze Japanese bell that would have been used in a traditional butsudan(family Buddhist shrine) It dates to the early Taisho Era(c. 1915) The bell has a deep long lasting melodic resonance. It comes complete with a beautifully embroidered silk cushion and silk padded wooden striker. The cushion is made of 15 sections of silk and has chrysanthemum blossom and geometric design(see pictures) The bell is 4 1/4" 7.5 cm) in diameter and 2" 5 cm) tall and aside from a deep aged patina as well some natural aged verdigris from a century of loving use it remains in very fine condition. The cushion still has vibrant colors and remains in fine condition. The striker is in good condition. You'll love it.
